Season 2024 - Hawthorn

Nah my son did ! He was nine then, I haven’t spoken to him since.

Tough, but fair.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has blasted a racist social media post directed at one of his players, saying if it came from a Hawks fan they are unwelcome at the AFL club.

Mitchell opened his media conference after Hawthorn’s 27-point win over Adelaide at the MCG with unprompted comments about the post targeting an unnamed player.

The Hawks confirmed the incident happened on Saturday and the player who was targeted knows about the abuse.

“I love footy and I love our game, and I think the position we have as leaders of the community, we need to do the best job we possibly can around discrimination,” Mitchell said.

"We have some stuff — I don’t want to go into it — but I just want to put it out there that if you have any form of racism in you, as a Hawthorn person, we’re not interested in having you as part of our club.

"So while we’re all enjoying a fantastic win, and we should all be enjoying it, unfortunately some parts of our Hawthorn family can’t enjoy it because of what heroes on their keyboards think they’re capable of doing.

“Any one of those who ever wears brown and gold, we don’t want you.”

Mitchell added: “For that to be called out because of how they look — honestly, grow up. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

He said he hesitated about giving publicity to the matter.

“I spoke to some people involved and said, ‘Is this something you want me [to say]?’, because I only want to help the people affected by it,” Mitchell said.

"When they are affected, all I can do is support them in any way I have the power to do.

"I get the power of a press conference [and I asked], ‘Do you want me to support that, or does it make it worse?’, and the comment was, ‘We need to show as much support as we can’.

“I have people who should be celebrating — who are celebrating still — but there’s a black dog following them around, if you like.”

Yeh that’s what I thought but just not a great phrase choice there.

So Mitchell is saying people shouldn’t bully people. Right.

It is a very common and well used phrase for depression and has been around since the 1700’s. It is not a bad phrase to use and holds no other meaning (it is not a racial term in other words).

If you thought the Essendon Edge was lame, then Mitchell just out did us with his rascal pack comment about his forward line.

Goes back to BC, Horace referring to a black dog following him.

I do know it’s meaning and historical references - just seems like a poorly chosen phrase to me.

Not only are they now riding a wave of momentum in terms of getting a flurry of wins, all of a sudden they’re a week away from being just about the healthiest list in the comp.

Theyll lose a few games in a row soon, followed by half dozen guys going down injured then the wheels proper fall off.

Wouldn’t be too surprised if Richmond knock them over for Dusty’s 300th.

Lynch back, and some of their stars are on the way back.

Hawks ended up taking care of them pretty easily, looked a bit like Richmond has slipped into their ‘idgaf’ mindset after losing their granny against us.

Back on topic Hawks are rising up a lot of peoples’ power rankings - they have the bye next week but after that a fairly hellish run home which will make it hard for them to have a good shot at the 8

Two fairly soft games to end the season though so who knows what could happen but I’d think they will switch to looking forward to next year soon

Who’s up for an Ess (5th) v Haw (8th) Elimination Final ?

Anyone ???

They’ve had a fair run of form recently… if they sneak into the 8 given their start they’d probably be rated top 4 on form

They’d have to Jag at least a couple from the Cats, Pies, GWS or Blues… A lot of which are away

Look, they won’t make it (probably).

I was being mischievous, as a loss to a rebuilding Hawks team in yet another Elimination Final defeat would crash the Server, along with our collective hearts.
