My Prediction

For a team that really don’t matter, it is still so much fun to watch them perform so terribly. I think in large part because of the nostalgia, St Kilda being a terrible football team plays such a large part of everyone’s football experience. Combine that with their coach being an arrogant tool and it just feels right that the Saints are mediocre.

The backline slipped from first to fifth for points conceded but truth be told. There wasn’t much difference, their defensive gameplan still help up. They lose Battle who has been solid but is hardly a superstar. They have had Caminitti training to take his place and to be honest, I probably couldn’t pick either out of a police line up. They have Dougal Howard that sounds like an accountant and plays football like a VFL star. NWM and Sinclair are quality half backs but realistically the backs themselves aren’t stars but the structure works.

The midfield is boring. They brough in Liam Henry who got very injured but they need him and his pace. I do like that they thought their midfield was a little workmanlike and one paced and then brought in Macrae who is all of those things. They will need Hill and even NWM to spend time through the middle to give them some run. They would also love an injury free season from Steele but I am not sure that is on the cards.

The forward line makes the midfield look interesting. They have offered Max King the sort of long term contract that makes Kane Cornes lose his mind. King has looked good in patches but definitely not living up to the hype. They then have big bodies in Owens and Phillipou both of who struggled last year but they will be looking to step up this year. Higgins has been pretty good for them since going across but he isn’t reliable.

The ruck is good, they need Marshall to stay fit. He is strong around the ground and his tap work is generally pretty reliable. The coach has done it all (especially at Christmas parties (allegedly)), unless you count winning premierships as a part of doing it all in which case he has not. His promises of moving with the times and becoming more attacking have been wildly off the mark.

The Saints feel weaker than last year which I am not sure is accurate. They lose more talent than they brought in but I think they will be able to find improvement from players on the list as well as a couple of top ten draft picks. Not much went their way with injuries last year so I expect even with a bit more luck they will improve. I think they could well play finals. I think they finish in the 7-10 range.

Anything that annoys that sh*thead makes me smile

The Saints are nowhere near a serious tilt for the flag, yet they seem to be recruiting as if they are.

Contrary to most on here, I don’t mind Ross as a coach, he gets the most out of a list. However the way he develops new players and rebuilds a list leaves a lot to be desired. He relies on a workman like midfield with one or two X factors, combined with adept small forwards who pressure well. This works when your midfield general is Lenny Hayes, less so when it’s Jack Steele (who isn’t bad, just not at the same level).

NWM is a gun, love watching him play.

Could go as high as sixth, or as low as 12th.

A team that rivals Essendon for modern day irrelevance.

Theyll be slightly higher than us. Will be Nowhere near the top 8 and mired in no mans land again. Crap list and putrid midfield

They’ve lost some experience in Battle, Membery & Ross.
Is there enough natural improvement in their youngsters to push into the 8 ?
What will King produce ?

Too many question marks for me…9th - 13th

Has there a more underwhelming highly touted draftee in recent memory. He is a serial under performer. The forward line has been built around him and thus far he has not delivered.

He’s had injuries, and there is plenty of time for a KP player not yet 25.

Still, if we get to the end of this decade and Caddy is meandering thru his career the way King is, I guess most of us will be pretty disappointed.

Phillipou training in midfield, interesting comparing to Tsatas this year.

Tsatas > Phillipou

Gee that’s a big blow, he was looking like taking the next step, and for that midfield of theirs that was critical. An already average midfield has lost Crouch, Dow and Phillipou.

And their backline which lost a central figure in Josh Battle has also lost Dougal Howard (shoulder dislocation).

That must be annoying for Saints fans, after he tore up match practice. They also have a few other in the rehab group.
Phillipou - 10-14 weeks
Dougal Howard dislocated shoulder TBC
Hunter Clark Groin - 2-3 weeks
Liam Henry Knee 4-6 weeks
Rowan Marshall - stress fracture pelvis/back issue 5-8 weeks
Dow - Knee infection TBC
Tauru - back issue 4-8 weeks

That fourth round pick for this years second is starting to look like good business

Death riding Saints will be just as fun.

It’s being reported that King, Sinclair, and Wood went down during their match simulation. Their injury situation was already dire, and they lost some solid players during the offseason. It’s shaping up to be a rough year for them.
