My Prediction

There has been few greater teases in the last 20 years than the Bulldogs. I know they won one almost 10 years ago and they have made another grand final but their list should have produced more regular top four finishes and been a challenger for longer. They have a lot of quality players that do nowhere near as much as their talent would suggest they are capable of. This surely comes down to the coach who is riding his premiership for job security as long as he can.

The backline relies on the Liam Jones who has been a great stopper since returning and the discovery that Lobb can actually serve a purpose was a surprise to the entire footballing world. Dale, Richards and Duryea give them run off half back and pretty good ball use. Their starting backline is good but they are only a KP injury away from disaster.

The midfield relies on Bont and Libba to get the work done. Treloar was solid enough last year but to be honest, if it wasn’t for the sensible 90’s flat top I wouldn’t know he was on the park most of the time. They would have liked Smith to have stayed and got back up and running but it wasn’t to be. Sanders, Gallagher and Williams will have to do some of the heavy lifting this year. They brought in Matt Kennedy, he wont add much, I just think its funny.

The forward line is full of talent, a little less since JUH has stepped away for his “mental health”. Sam Darcy is probably the best young talent in the game (unless you ask a Collingwood supporter). Naughton may have peaked as he doesn’t seem to be improving but where he is now is still pretty good. Weightman and West provide small forward pressure and scoring. It is a good forward line that may even benefit from being forced to run two talls rather than three.

The ruck in Tim English is boring and may be a little injured. He doesn’t seem to have lived up to his potential just yet but still sits comfortably in the top half of the rucks. The coach is a fraud. He needs to produce something this year other than another tantrum. Scraping into finals last year with the list he has wasn’t good enough.

The dogs have a good list. They don’t have many gaps despite losing a little bit of quality over the off season, I don’t think any of those outs are life changing for them. They have a top four list but need to win more games. I suspect another year of being not quite good enough might be enough for a change of coach. I don’t rate their attitude or hunger and think they will settle again for 7-9.

They have lost a lot of experience in the off season, which will not be easily replaced. As a result a lot of heavy lifting will be left to too few. Libba is as tough as they come, too tough for his own good at times with his attack on the ball. One more concussion will see him finished. The Bont is still all class and backs it up season after season, he is a footballing marvel, but he needs more support. The defence relies on Jones and Bailey Dale but like the midfield relies too much on too few. The forward line looks the classiest/most dangerous area of the ground. JUH has threatened to take the league by storm with his talent, the prototypical modern KPF. Now he has to live up to that potential.

The coach? He has not produced the results his playing list says he should have. His lone flag is now disappearing into the rearview of distant memories. How long can he survive? If the Doggies miss the finals l feel he will be given the royal order of the boot. They are only 60/40 to make the finals this year.

Adam Treloar out for 8-10 weeks with a calf injury.

Wow. That’s huge. He had a great season last year. He’s had a fair few injuries over the years…

Big blow for them

■■■■ coach.

Players obviously sick of his usual us vs them schtick.

On face value, these are premiership winning numbers. Remarkable they haven’t finished top 4 more often since 2016. They’ve had the deepest and arguably most talented midfield in the game for a long time now.

I’ve got a great idea!

How 'bout the bulldogs ■■■■ right off?

They didn’t finish top four in 16.
Very weird stat that this side has never finished top four despite making 2 GFs.

One of the better things to come out of last season was rolling the Dogs, even if they were going through a dip at the time.
They turned their season around after that.

Footscray are a great team that haven‘t shown it‘s full potential this decade. They show their best when coming up against sides like ours but seem to lack that killer instinct when trying to finish top 4 or winning finals.

It is genuinely one of the most incredible turnarounds I can remember.

He was all but shown the door part way through the year and now he’s seen as an integral part of their system.

Also, any team that has Bontempelli isn’t going to have the bottom fall out. They’ll be midtable, anywhere from 6-12.

I think they just miss out. More midfield depth gone, defence questionable and Bev looks like hes about to have another meltdown. They’ll frustrate again and finish 9th

The Maribyrnong City Council isn’t making life any easier for them.

Also the wrong side of 30.
Those injuries and the 1-2% drop off in speed/power from them can add up pretty quick.

He had a horriffic injury at the Pies when he tore his hamstring off the bone. He has done well not to tear the hammy again.

Correct, they were 7th at the end of H&A, but from memory only % off top 4.

Unlike my friend who is a mad Bulldogs supporter, I tipped them in that first final in Perth.

Liam Jones apparently done a hammy in a match sim session up in Maroochydore.

How old is Jones? Bulldogs having a bad pre-season so far. Jamarra, Treloar and now Jones.
