My Prediction

I feel like I could probably cut and paste the predictions from the last decade and be about the mark. Hoping they will drop off the cliff but acknowledging that they wont and will probably finish somewhere around the top four. I think the challenge for Geelong is not necessarily staying competitive but somehow turning perpetual winning records into ultimate success.

The backline suffered with injury last year and they have turned over some talls in the past few years. They still have SDK, O’Sullivan and then of course Stewart who we saw last year, they need to keep on the paddock. Guthrie and Humphries back there will give them run. It isn’t an exciting backline but they get the job done.

The midfield may a really mild concern for the Cats, Smith seemed to lose some effectiveness as the season went on and they were very reliant on Holmes. Dempsey was good last year as a point of difference and they have genuine grunt from Atkins who is a maniac and the newly added Worpel. They don’t bat deep and Dangerfield will spend even less time there this year.

The forward line is still very good. Cameron is still maybe the best forward in the competition (Sam Darcy is coming). Neale has stepped into Hawkins spot and owned it comfortably. They have damaging smalls in Close, Miers, Dangerfield and Stengle if he makes it back. They get enough looks to kick winning scores consistently.

The rucks have not been amazing for a while but someone at AFL house has drafted up rules to suit their current situation with Blicavs essentially able to be an extra mnidfielder. I think they will benefit this year. The coach is good. Very good. The players play for him and he has created a culture somewhere between country footy club and elite training facility.

Geelong are a team I have trouble being excited by. They feel like a very good team that bat deep but maybe not quite good enough to challenge for the premiership. They will win enough games to be top six and maybe top four. They will pump the Bombers again. I think they finish 3-6

I would love for them to fall away. I’ve accepted it’s never going to happen.

Watching them play live gives you a chalk and cheese comparison with Essendon on work rate. Geelong, to a man, will bust their arse running both ways.

They just seem to keep getting it done more often than not. I’ll keep assuming they’ll finish in the top 4 until they don’t.

They won’t win too many games with that team

You forgot to say that their midfield won’t be any good unless Bruhn pulls his finger out and has a go this season.

I have to stand back and admire their ability to remain not only competitive with the best teams out there, but also be serious contenders. Their culture is second to none, and it is a blueprint for sustained success. They will be up and about again 2026, but l don’t see them improving enough to win the big prize.

Looked like Tom Stewart had rolled back a few years last night. VGF. Very good footballer.
