Season 2026 - North Melbourne

North BF saying that Clarkson may have pushed the issue by wanting to chat about the contract extension. Who knows. Bizarre presser.

They are desperately trying to save their own skin but Hood has to go. Hiring Clarkson was her masterstroke. She has to fall on her sword.

Longmire on AFL 360 saying “let’s wait for the dust to settle” when asked if he is keen on the job.

Simpson said he hasn’t thought of it.

Wow.
This came out of the blue.
Terrible timing too. They’ll need to rush their appointment in time for trade period.

Firstly…
WTF is it with North? Where did they think they were and where did they expect to be?
The trade of their first pick last year was a club that showed it didn’t know where they were. They were not ‘ripe’ for a jump up the ladder at all.
Then this year, did they actually think they’d leap from bottom 4 into the top ten? They challenged for a spot, but I didn’t expect them to make it. Next year is their jump year and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a bigger jump than expected because there are a few teams who could fall terribly due to what they have on their list.
Secondly…
WTF did they think Clark was? He wasn’t a defensive master coach. He basically lived off a great list manager who gave him access to multiple generational players that are a good chance to form a premiership team. He was never a ‘get the most out of a list’ type of coach. He always needed to added talent to get better results. That’s evident with the Hawks adding Burgoyne and Lake to an already pretty darn good team.
Thirdly…
The game has gone past the coaches that were there last decade. The game went from attack first footy to a forward press footy that took almost 8 years to fight through. And when it did (let’s say it was 2022 when Geelong broke through) the game has become defence first at all times then attack off the back of that. The main aim of the game is to handle the oppositions forward advances and then take advantage of them being out of position. That’s why McVeigh says players need to be aware of where they are in the defensive setup. He means when we have the ball as much as when we don’t have it too. It’s why that free flowing football we saw in the first month has now come to a grind in finals as per normal. Because teams are better set up defensively and take a bit more effort and switching of matchups to gain advantages.
Fourthly…
For those of us expecting finals anytime soon…
This is a great example that it doesn’t take a few years to bounce off the bottom of the ladder. Don’t expect a 1993 resurgence. That’s long gone. We are just as much a chance to sack McVeigh as North were after their four years with Clarkson. Take a look at their results and consider whether you’d see past those enough to say ‘it’s worth giving him another year’. If we have North’s results from when Clark joined, I’d guess we’d want McVeigh sacked by the end of his first season. When they won an insignificant game to miss out on Harley Reid. And if not that, it’s when they grabbed Caleb Daniel, Darling and Parker and played them every bloody week instead of [insert young up and comer here].

Like it or not, we need to accept where we are and understand what it takes to climb the ladder and that it takes time you want it to be sustainable. Sometimes, you can’t time when you take that leap up the ladder. But when you do, you have to take advantage of it.

What did he do?

Simpson said the Essendon role was clear to him (as in not interested), he did have to think about the Carlton opportunity - doesn’t want to say no about the North position right now.

Think Longmire is also keen based on his language.

allegedly didn’t want to go into 2027 without a contract extension, and norf wouldn’t budge

That doesn’t really explain the pile-on from Hood and Viney, plus some players (Trembath and Threadgold) liking posts about his sacking.

Funny how quick that flips around.

The exact same criticism applies to your original claim.

Xander McGuire just said Hird will have nothing to do with the North coaching gig.

Lets be fair, North would want nothing to do with him  he hasnt ■■■■■■■ coached in a decade

I don’t think it was a reflection on Hird saying no - just in general that he absolutely won’t be part of it (which could be based on North’s feedback too)
