Sydney Swans players linked to ‘sexual assault allegations’ after MCG game
Victoria Police have launched an investigation into claims of a sexual assault at a Melbourne hotel allegedly involving Sydney Swans players.
In a statement released on Monday, police confirmed detectives are probing claims over an incident that allegedly occurred on Sunday night at the Pullman hotel after the Swans defeated Essendon.
“Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault in East Melbourne on 17 August,” police stated.
“The incident occurred at a hotel on Wellington Parade in the early hours of the morning.
The exact circumstances are yet to be established and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.”
The Sydney Swans stated: “Several players were involved in an alleged incident in Melbourne last night. The Swans have notified the AFL and relevant authorities and cannot provide further comment at this stage.”
The Herald Sun has reported that police descended on the East Melbourne hotel earlier Monday with up to eight plain clothes and uniform police, carrying clipboards and camera equipment, seen moving around the venue. Several more guarded the staircase leading to the main entrance. Several marked and unmarked police cars were parked outside.
