My Prediction

Any doubts over Longmire’s ability to coach was cast aside last year as Cox took a premiership fancy and turned them into midtable slop. They looked so much less organised and whilst you could make a strong argument that injuries had a big impact, they just didn’t look as solid as they have in previous seasons. It may seem dramatic but I think the pressure on Cox this year is real, another finish out of the finals and he could be on his way.

The backline on paper still looks solid and playing half their games at the SCG has pretty good benefits. McCartin is back where he belongs and hard to believe but Rampe will go around again. Melican rounds out the traditional talls but they also have Blakey who gives them run and attack of the half back line. They would love to keep Callum Mills on the field this year.

The midfield is where things went wrong last year. Gulden never getting his body quite right made a massive difference. They will be wanting a full season from him which then allows Warner more space to play his natural attacking game. Heeney and Rowbottom through the middle and enough depth by the way of McInerny, the other Campbell and Sheldrick. It is a very good midfield including Grundy who the new rules may really suit.

The forward line should be much better for the inclusion of Curnow who is going to benefit massively from having quality delivery out of the middle. He could kick 80 this year if he stays fit (I have seen the close ups of his knees and they look like custard). Heeney rotating through the middle and up forward is still one of the most dangerous players in the game. It will be interesting to see if McDonald improves or even Amartey who looks every bit a VFL player. I think Papley will benefit from Curnow as well as a second quality small forward in Rosas.

The ruck situation is pretty much Grundy or bust. Grundy has been very good in Sydney and I think the new ruck rules will favour the mobile rucks once the ball hits the ground, he is due a big year. Dean Cox so far has continued the tradition of rucks being bog average AFL coaches. He has the list to turn things around and would want a quick start or things could get ugly quickly.

The Swans have a complete list. There is no obvious weaknesses. I think they can probably pretend that last year didn’t happen and they should be deep in contention this season. I think they look like a possible top four team. I have them finished 4-6.

Great write up.

I’d love to see them spiral, crash and burn

Would be nice to see these stats for them for the next 20 or so years.

Hopefully Billy Cootee can crack an AFL game at some stage this year.

Otherwise, yeah, should at least make the wildcard game if not finals outright (top six).

I reckon they will make the 8 easily. Curnow is a huge get for them and gives them so much more firepower

Yeah they are a team who tend to bounce back the following year if they have a down one. Wouldn’t surprise me too much if they make the top 4. But i’d say 5-8th is about right.

AFL wont want them out of the 8. Will be top 5 with their ■■■■■■ home ground and umpiring advantage.

Hope they make the grand final and get rinsed again. Cant say what I really thing about certain individuals or else I will get banned longer than WOB

Go and get absolutely ■■■■■■ you utter ■■■■ of a football club.

May they FARKING rot.

Living in Sydney I reckon the Swans have rusted on supporters now. Yes crowds will drop away if they lose more than they win, but they won’t collapse completely. The other thing in their favour is a lot of footy fans from interstate who live in Sydney with high disposable incomes who are happy to buy memberships or attend games to get their footy fix.

The AFL’s real efforts need to be in supporting the Giants. They are a long way off have a sustainable crowd base of greater than 6-10k in my view. Unlike the Swans they don’t capture the interstate expat market with high incomes given their location so they are getting footy fans to their games unless it’s the opposition that draws them in.

Remember when we tried to poach Paton from the Saints? Wow his career trajectory dived.

Was last year an anomaly, or the new standard? Longmire picked the right time to walk away. Curnow will drag them over the line in a few games, their onball brigade looks potent and therevis plenty of talent on their list. Top 8 but in the lower rungs feels about right.

Loving all of these team reviews. Thanks for the write ups!

I think Swans are part of a group of 8 teams vying for spots 5 to 8 on the ladder.

Charlie could monster the SCG if his body holds up. Gulden to Curnow may create an assist to scorer record, only to be overtaken by Butters to Darcy in 2027.

Reckon they are primed to go with their list. It’s just about injuries and their ageing backline. Predict they finish 7 to 8th.

Taylor Adams (Achilles) remains the only Swan looking likely to miss the season opener. He was unfortunately knocked out in an off-field incident over the weekend.

How do you get knocked out off-field???

He was hit outside a pub over the Australia Day weekend. Interesting he was there while recovering from his Achilles injury

These scumbags will be the big risers this year IMO. I think they will be in with a sniff of top 4

Another young player cut down by back stress issues- Max King likely out for the season.

Injury and that name go together like a hand and glove.
