When’s the Blitz pool party?
Ha! There’s already a stack of inflatable crap people have gifted us with.
I’m currently trying to illegally acquire some pink flamingo’s to finish off the look of my pool.
We did have a bit of a hiccup with the pool/equipment. Despite remaining full for around 14 months during the build, and for 2 months after the equipment was first connected, once the cover came off and the equipment started up we developed a leak. It took me a while to notice because the water was initially so filthy I was backwashing a bit and vacuuming to waste etc. But once the water was crystal clear it became apparent that I was losing around 40ml-50ml per day (for me that’s the hose on full blast for an hour each day). Apparently it’s normal to lose 50ml per week.
After checking the landscapers hadn’t driven a star picket through the pipes, and letting it drain for a week and watching the level dip below all of the holes (skimmer box, heat pump return, filter returns, heat pump intakes), they figured it was the hydrostatic(?) valve, and so the pool company got a leak detection bloke to come and fix it (pretty funny seeing Scuba Steve in your driveway), and now we are as good as gold. Still not sure exactly what it was, but we don’t have to pay for it which means it wasn’t our fault.
Due to diluting the water so much (I probably replaced the equivalent of a whole pool over a couple of weeks) I then had “low salt” (which means chlorinator struggles to chlorinate) which fortunately the pool company replenished for me. Apparently, it’s around $50 a bag for the magnesium salts and we were initially supplied with 18 to get us started up, and they dropped me another 8 bags which I was grateful for since my expectations of pool companies aren’t very high.
One thing I’m loving is how easy it is to maintain the levels/chemicals (touch wood). The probes automatically add acid and chlorinate the water. I’m sure things will come up but I’m a bit hesitant to go to the pool shop as I was using test strips and took a sample to the pool shop and they sold me stuff I ended up not even using.
The bloke who delivered me the magnesium salt was actually the owner of the pool company, he seemed to think our filter was good enough to service a pool 2-3 times as big. We said we probably only need 2 x 4 hour cycles during summer and as long as the acid and chlorine levels are good and the water looks great then we shouldn’t need to do anything (aside from add another bag or 2 of salts every few months).
I have a pool cover but if I leave it off over night when it’s cool, you do lose a bit of water… What Brand of equipment did they install? Interested to know what minerals they put in as well… They put maytronics Dead Sea into mine and although happy with it, it is on the expensive side, not that I have had to put in much since start up
My ex once accused me of acting like a flamingo.
I had to put my foot down.
The salts we use are Aquatherep’e.
Our heat pump is Astral Pool 16.8kw
The filter is Astral Pool CA340 (high rate sand filter). Says it turns over 112,400 litres in 6 hours, probably depends on the pump. Our pump for the filter is an Astral Pool Viron. Full speed is 3200 something.
The controller thing is Astral Pool Equilibrium, and we’ve got chlorine and ph sensors so it maintains the level by dosing chlorine and acid as required.
The heat pump costs about a dollar an hour off peak so I usually run it from around 8am to 3pm if we are swimming that arvo. It will get up to around 29 and then drop down to around 24 over night. Didn’t run the heat pump at all yesterday and so it was down to 22 this morning and only 26.5 at 3pm which was fine for me. Tomorrow we will have visitors and it will be warmer so probably don’t need it to be too hot, 28 will be plenty.
Sounds like a great setup, I have something very similar with the Astral Halo setup, but same same. Has PH and ORP so self doses and sorts itself out which has been great. I have a solar setup that does most of my heating. Looks like we have a few nice days to come, enjoy the pool!
Needs a fence around it. If a visitor falls in and breaks a leg, the owner’ll be in for the massive damage compensation payments the Yankee Doodles go in for.
The place is for sale. Note the asking price: US$340,000, which is around AU$525,000…
When do the people in Melbourne town start up their pool? I have been considering turning on the heating and changing from winter mode to summer. But is it a waste of time?
I’d suggest you do it when you plan to use it.
Probably with the weather at the moment, I’m a few more weeks away.
Let us celebrate our new arrangment with the adding of chocolate to milk.
I don’t know what you are meaning, but who can say no to chocolate milk!
Simpsons reference.
