Dual premiership coach and Essendon's exiting senior coach, Mark Thompson, has not only ruled himself out of the running for the Adelaide coaching job, but has clearly signalled his disappointment with Adelaide's axing of his friend and former assistant Brenton Sanderson.

"No, I'm not interested," said Thompson when asked about the job that had opened up at the Crows. "I wouldn't go there - especially now." Sanderson worked alongside "Bomber" at Geelong, where the pair forged a close relationship. Thompson had been in contact with Sanderson on Wednesday night, when the news of his sacking filtered through.

Essendon wishes to retain Thompson in a new role supporting the coaches, which is yet to be confirmed or finalised.

Thompson has not been sounded out by the Gold Coast, either. The Suns' board are meeting with senior coach Guy McKenna on Thursday as part of an intensive club review of the club's football operations that has created rumblings throughout the AFL  community about McKenna's position.

The Sanderson sacking also surprised the coach's management, the influential Elite Sports Properties, which had been preparing to meet with Sanderson on Friday and had been heavily involved in the conversations between Goodwin and Melbourne. Goodwin was the frontrunner to become senior assistant under Roos, in which he would be in pole position - or have an outright guarantee - of the senior position once Roos finishes at the end of 2016. Like Sanderson, he is managed by Craig Kelly's ESP.

Sanderson was contracted for the next two years, meaning the Crows face a huge payout - perhaps of close to a million dollars.

The news of Sanderson's sacking caught the AFL world by surprise, as it has been the McKenna who has been under pressure and was seen as vulnerable. The AFL coaches association had not even been informed of Sanderson's axing on Wednesday evening

I was waiting on when a communication specialist would try to link Bomber Thompson to the vacant Adelaide job. Glad one of them decided to do some journalism and ask Bomber of his interest before going to print and got himself a better more correct story in the end.

Great job by Bomber to put out any fires relating to coaching Adelaide. Hopefully, once Paddy makes a decision, he does the same. Will end a lot of the rubbish reporting good and quick (at least until the media find another carcass to feed off).

What that really means is he won’t be going anywhere- guaranteed. As any senior position that comes up now will have to involve a similar sacking of the current coach. I hope Simon gets the job as he’s stuck by us and been excellent through the worst of it.

He's giving him a boob squeeze that I'd only give my wife, and I wouldn't touch another human like that, male or female.

I'm sure they're just good mates.

Correct.

What's wrong with the traditional Australian hug or a kiss or a lick, a grope on the ■■■■ or a bit of a dry root??

He looks like he's checking for lumps actually.

Not sure if he also checked the more common place for lumps in middle aged men - bit further south.

Oh Adelaide what've you done

brave man.

wish him well.

I dunno why but the thought of Mark Riccuito with his big muscly macho-man moustache and his weird little 2 year old baby voice giving someone the tap on the shoulder talk... I find that slightly amusing.

He's odd.

Like Pesci in casino, "got your head in a farking vice"

I'm surprised Melbourne would go after him.  I thought they'd go after an assistant from a club that has tasted success in the last 5 years or so.  Goodwin last tasted success in 1997/98 as a player.

Goodwin's at least had experience in a high pressure environment. Don't think that being booed by Melbourne fans would distract him after the last two years.

He will do well. Thanks for the great work Goody. Best of luck!

remind me what happened to pesci at the end

see, what they have actually done this time, is research who is good at coaching, realising all that other ■■■■ is actually bollocks
