Six people shot and killed at mosque in Quebec City, Canada

Remember when reddit/4chan sluethed the boston bombing? Lol. Ended well.

One of the more cringeworthy social/political trends of the past decade or so is the tendency of IT guys (and the reddit/4chan culture as a whole, which are two groups with a huge crossover) to believe that because they understand computers better than anyone else they understand politics, criminology, science, law, economics, journalism, history, and sociology better than anyone else too. They have such immense self-regard based on their expertise in their field, but such contempt for anyone else’s expertise.

And yes, I’m an IT guy saying this. :stuck_out_tongue: The whole thing is pretty embarrassing really.

Not to mention the conspiracy theory movements many get sucked into.

Imagine the twitter uproar and world wide the hate if this was two Muslims went into a church. Quickly already fish and chip wrapping this way around

So he's white and it's a hate crime. This should go well.

Out of curiosity, not trying to be a ■■■■ but what are Canada’s gun laws like compared to say ours and at the opposite end, the USA

Canada
Many analysts characterize Canada’s gun laws as strict in comparison to the United States, while others say recent developments have eroded safeguards. Ottawa, like Washington, sets federal gun restrictions that the provinces, territories, and municipalities can supplement. Federal regulations require all gun owners, who must be at least eighteen years of age, to obtain a license that includes a background check and a public safety course.

There are three classes of weapons: nonrestricted (e.g., ordinary rifles and shotguns), restricted (e.g., handguns, semiautomatic rifles/shotguns, and sawed-offs), and prohibited (e.g., automatics). A person wishing to acquire a restricted firearm must obtain a federal registration certificate, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Modern Canadian gun laws have been driven by prior gun violence. In December 1989, a disgruntled student walked into a Montreal engineering school with a semiautomatic rifle and killed fourteen students and injured over a dozen others. The incident is widely credited with driving subsequent gun legislation, including the 1995 Firearms Act, which required owner licensing and the registration of all long guns (i.e., rifles and shotguns) while banning more than half of all registered guns. However, in 2012, the government abandoned the long-gun registry, citing cost concerns.

Having been (at least on the fringes of) in IT for the past 30 years, lots of IT people would now be diagnosed as quite a way along the autism spectrum based on the way they do it now. And the more esoteric the IT, the further along the spectrum.

Nothing to see here. Not a terrorist act. Just a crazy guy.

Nothing to see here. Not a terrorist act. Just a crazy guy.

Like the Lindt siege guy. But there are legal consequences of determining something as a terrorist act. Usually, it affords the law enforcers and investigators greater powers.
In this case, it may afford powers over domestic non-Muslim extremists.

Canadian PM has already labelled it a terrorist act, hasn’t he?

He doesn’t count. Deranged beautiful hippy.

As a manager of IT guys, don’t fkn start me on this…

As someone who manages a security graduate, one is more than a handful. Cannot imagine dealing with more than one.

RCMP says it isn’t terror related

Although a lone wolf attack by any ethnicity or religion can be labelled terrorist.

Alt-facts strike again. The police indicated they were after two suspects, one of whom was Moroccan. It turned out the Moroccan was a witness and the police initially got it wrong and gave the media the wrong information.

Don’t think it was the cops who gave out the info, but obtained from police scanners, which went viral on social media.

Suspect charged in Quebec mosque attack
Amid pressure from the Canadian prime minister, Fox News has apologized for a tweet that inaccurately identified the suspect in Sunday night’s Quebec mosque terror attack as a man of Moroccan origin.

FoxNews.com initially corrected the misreported information with a tweet and an update to the story on Monday. The earlier tweets have now been deleted,” Refet Kaplan, the managing director at FoxNews.com, said in a statement. “We regret the error.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office called on Fox News to “either retract or update” the “false and misleading” tweet, noting that the suspect had been identified as a French Canadian, not someone of Moroccan origin.

Alexandre Bissonnette, 27, faces six counts of first-degree murder and five attempted murder charges in Sunday’s shooting, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Quebec.

Authorities have not released a possible motive, but Trudeau denounced the attack as an act of terrorism.

“These tweets by Fox News dishonor the memory of the six victims and their families by spreading misinformation, playing identity politics, and perpetuating fear and division within our communities,” Kate Purchase, the prime minister’s director of communications, said in a statement.

“We need to remain focused on keeping our communities safe and united instead of trying to build walls and scapegoat communities,” Purchase continued. “Muslims are predominantly the greatest victims of terrorist acts around the world. To paint terrorists with a broad brush that extends to all Muslims is not just ignorant – it is irresponsible.”

“If we allow individuals and organizations to succeed by scaring people, we do not actually end up any safer,” she wrote. “Fear does not make us safer. It makes us weaker. Ramping up fear and closing our borders is not a solution. It distracts from the real issues that affect people’s day to day life.”

Umm…

Two suspects were under arrest after six people were killed in a shooting at a Quebec City mosque, police said on Monday,

Police said the above.

and a source said one was French-Canadian and the other was of Moroccan heritage.

Source said the above.

Also in your link two paragraphs down…

Police declined to give details of the suspects’ identities or possible motives for the attack during evening prayers at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec. Five people were critically injured, and 12 were treated for minor injuries, a spokeswoman for the Quebec City University Hospital said.

So it was a ‘source’ who gave the name and nationallity.

Poorly written article. So your point is?

It would be pretty shabby if the cops were to say one was of Moroccan descent and not to identify the descent of the other one. I would imagine a Person of Moroccan descent could also come with the label of French Canadian. After all it is just a linguistic delineation.

Probably the second biggest terrorist attack on American soil was committed by WASPs in Oklahoma City.
