Something seriously wrong with the club (Part 4, August 2024)

I told my son last week that it was highly likely I would never see an Essington team win a flag in my lifetime.

He agreed.

I am not that old.

It’s interesting the EFC have chosen to raise Club Memberships in 2025 or should that read Club Membershts. It’s a very brave thing to do, considering the huge amount discontentment of EFC Members. It will be interesting to see how it all balances out in 2025.

I think Blitz isn’t a great indicator of the plebeian Essendon members/supporters as political Twitter isn’t a great indicator of political view/IQ of the masses. We are the obsessed, weird and in our specific case broken community. Lots of people just like putting the scarf on.

I think he would bring balance to the Board. He is not a suit jostling with the other suits to make business deals, plotting and scheming between and against each other.
He’s from the Establishment, not a corporate, not beholden to the wheeler dealers at AFL House, through his wife he would have an appreciation of the workings of the AFL Commission. He’s well connected, has nothing to prove, as a 72yo, he has had more experience in life. He also brings some respectability to the Club’s image.
He could be one of the few independents, committed to improving Essendon’s future rather than his own.

They don’t have a choice. They need to find a way to grow revenue and increasing membership prices are easy, and lazy. This is what happens when footy isn’t performing and the commercial endeavours are sub standard.

Yeah I have seen it a few times and I am not sure I get it :woman_shrugging:t2:

What’s the different to what we currently have?

Modern corporate boards reflect the community and their client base. Appointing a 72 year old, wealthy white guy is a missed opportunity. His views and experiences will be based in the 1970’s and 1980’s no matter how much he is aware of that. The Board has played safe and protected itself from outside views and influences. Get ready for more of the same for the next 20 years. Such a tone deaf and selfish appointment.

We should have targeted a 45 year with experience in building a health care business or a 35 year old marketing expert. Bonus points for appointing a female that doesn’t have a Melbourne private school upbringing and more bonus points if they are from a non anglo culture.

Let us not forget how Linda Dessau deserted us at the hour of greatest need and supported Fat Vlad and Gill to get us well and truly stitched up.

She was rewarded for that then and now her old hubby is too.

“Remember when we were good” posts turn into “remember when we were good and then remember we became very ■■■■” posts.

Otherwise, no difference.

Phew. Glad to know the good things won’t change.

Health Care businesses are some of the biggest rorters.
When one of Hawthorn’s biggest sponsors was a private health insurer, the players were forced to take out private health insurance with the sponsor. They paid more insurance than if they had been private individuals .
Get a business person on the Board or as a sponsor, business flows to them from Club employees.
We have enough marketeers on the Board, so many business or ex business.
Buy my product.
We briefly had an indigenous on the Board in Rioli, IDK why his time there was so short.

I was going with health care as the club has stated it wants to start a medical clinic to diversify the revenue base. Do we have any Board experience that can oversee that set-up? Some specialised experience may mean the club avoids expensive mistakes and gets the business up and running quickly.

If a player earning $400,000 has to pay an extra $500 a year for a sponsor’s product then I’m not that worried.

The current Board is an echo chamber which has not served us well. This appointment is a massive missed opportunity to change culture and be open to new experiences.

Didn’t have any business rorts to push.

Is it a medical clinic, compared to a specialist sport injury enterprise which would go beyond Australian Rules to soccer etc?
We used to have Doctors employed by the Club who had carved out their careers in practising in private hospitals and rehab type places. IIRC Carlton also had a sport injury specialist medico. There are specialist sport injury clinics all over Melbourne
IDK how that would fit with private health insurers and the coverage they give to sport injuries.

We only just got rid of a 40 something year old marketing expert. He was our CEO. Remember, i would like to avoid that situation again if we could.

Andrew Muir ticks a few boxes as a successful businessman, entrepreneur and involvement in some philanthropic organisations like the Starlight Foundation, Good Foundation . He’s also into the pet care business with Best Friends.

There’ll also be the regular shitposting of ‘remember when awe used to play in the [insert Anzac Day, Dreamtime & Country game]’.
There’ll also be the ‘North Melbourne have past us’ shitposting.

It will shrink though as people find other interest (and the loud supporters here find other forums to troll).
Looking at the BigFooty Fitzroy Forum, the first page gets to posts within threads from April earlier this year. The second page reaches back to May last year.
Very little activity. We’d probably be worse than that.

Those that want the club (or footy) to end should just give up on footy. Disengage completely. Enjoy life some other way. People do have a choice in this.
