You implied that it didnāt matter how Brisbane won in a response to Aceman who noted how percentage told the true story of our season. Brisbane can say all they like that they donāt care how they get wins, but the fact is that they arenāt saying that and then scraping over the line every other week, like us. If they had a percentage of 93.5%, theyād sound like fools saying they donāt care how they win.
Nope. We were never beating Melbourne in the wet with the team we put on the park. Doesnāt matter what intensity we brought (though I agree we should have at least brought it).
Probably the worst, most frustraiting moment of the year for me. Painted a clear picture Brad and co using crayons. Hopefully they have their pen licence now but boy oh boy that was an absolute shocker that everyone could see, made no sense at all, no matter what spin some put on it.
I see a team relying on a bunch of players who have regularly put in unforgiveable efforts lining up in key positions, too many who have not improved on the key weaknesses in their game across their careers despite getting long term contracts and so a lucky to make and lose a final ceiling.
Go back and review last year properly Nino, really great start, BOG fāin average middle where we were rationalising our close wins against Adelaide (thanks umps), VOMIT inducing efforts against the bottom clingers in norf, tigers and west coast, excruciating losses like the suns part 1, before hitting the Kings birthday game from which we entered into full essington mode as we fell apart and most importantly our pouty players just gave up as usual.
I was just flicking through YouTube and came across highlights of a game from 1995 so started watching. These are some of the players featured kicking goals - Salmon (kicked 8 in one of his last few for the club) Lloyd, Cummings, Hird, Mercuri, Long and Wanganeen played forward kicking 4. It got me thinking that this was nearly 30 years ago and I could only think of 2 ND players who I would rate in that company for talent and ability as a forward - Tippa and JD. Am I missing anyone? We can talk about all the other factors but weāve never been close to that list in 2 decades. Our recruiting post mid 90s was absolutely deplorable. You cannot develop shyte into Shinola. Nothing else will bring success until this area is dramatically improved.
I agree. Donāt mind the team though in that they havenāt named Shiel/Goldy/Laverde/Setterfield & thereās no Stringer/Kelly/Heppell/Hind in there this year.
A ceiling of playing finals with that 23 probably means that weāre also not bad enough to finish bottom 2-3 unless we get really bad luck with injuries (lol, us?).
Play the kids and cop a bottom 6 finish - itāll probably ending up being another pick 5-8 after academy bids but I donāt think weāre bad enough to end up with a top 3 pick, like some are hoping for.
If we want another crack at the point end of the draft, at least weāll have the ammo to trade up (or we get really lucky and Dees implode & bottom out). I reckon we can get another first with those two seconds as well.
I can stomach a bottom 6 finish if we play the kids, improve our %, our VFL program (looks promising so far), then take 2-3 first rounders in the draft.
I reckon you could make that same argument on every line.
Mids probably just Merrett and Jobe
Backs Hooker Hurley (maybe)
and of that six two of them of them were father sons
Our whole club starting with Dave, Craig and Brad should watch this clip
And reflect. Minnesota was fancied by absolutely nobody at the start of this season.
For too long our club has gone out of its way to
Avoid expectation and firmly place a ceiling on what we can achieve.
Some were saying that they should follow the Ange Postecoglou way. Look what heās done with Tottenham. Thatās a great pattern to follow. Fast forward to 2025 and they regress and heās probably a chance to be sacked.
Iām confident Brad Scott is trying to be uplifting to our players and get them into a mindset of achieving more than they are capable and earning back some respect. Thatās what the āEssendon Edgeā became. But itās up to the players to do their part and ride the wave of enthusiasm.
Thereās a lot of options to get more out of a particular group of players. But they donāt all work the same way with every team. The Leading Teams way worked wonders with Geelong. Didnāt work with the Bulldogs. The tough as nails Hardwick approach had itās ceiling with the Tigers, it wasnāt until they opened up and discussed their vulnerabilities that they turned.
