This is Roxy Music to me. I know they had this whole other thing before this, but I never got into that.
Avalon was shortlisted for a boy’s name. Almost certainly wouldn’t have gone with it, but it was there (at least he’d learn how to fight and the chicks would probably dig it).
Very personal read. Nothing to do with the lyrics, just the vibe. This feels like After.
After something traumatic, that you’ve got through and you’re okay and that’s worth recognising and you can rest now, but it’s still something that is going to take some getting over.
lol. I know that no-one else will see it that way.
Anyway, good song!
This lot normally bore me to tears. Lots of extended jamming, soloing and “ooooh… look how good I am on my instrument” wankery.
Every now and then though they put all that aside and focus on actually writing a tune, and they can be OK at it. This was a good one with quite a nice slow build about it, and over and done with in a bit over 4 minutes (which for them is positively Ramones-like in its brevity…)
I don’t even know if he was still involved at this point, but I think this is a waaaay better song.
And crazy that they have a song at all in 2017, let alone a good one.
It’d be like King putting out a good song in 2017.
Apparently Steven Wilson (who did the surround mix) has done a new 30-minute version of the title track “in the spirit of 80’s 12 inch versions”. Could be fun.
I had a few of Frankie’s 12" singles back in the day. Most of the 12" versions were guff… padded to buggery with indulgent ZTT generated nonsense. The Relax mixes were far and away the best ones.
