Great song ![]()
I also liked the Bap Kennedy version.
Todd Snider has just rleased a new album
Iām embarrassed ~ Iāve never heard that version (and itās lovely).
Thank you x
Another great track. That is such a brilliant album and it just kind of came out of nowhere. I like a lot of his other stuff as well, but Astral Weeks is a clear class above anything else. Thereās not a weak track on it. My personal favourites are the title track and Ballerina, but I listen to all of them. And with a scratch band, not a permanent backing group. Iāve read about the recording of it, and the consensus seems to be that the bass player (proper double bass, not the electric abomination) was the leader and set the tone, and for me listening to the bass line on every track is always a delight.
Love the album. Not sure youād be able to get away with the last few words of Cypress Avenue today, thoughā¦
The opening lines (lyrics) of the title track are extraordinary, straight out of the blocks (actually, all the lyrics are). Poetry.
Sweet thing, young lovers. Quality.
He performed Astral Weeks and Moondance at the Hollywood Bowl I guess about 8 years ago. I listened to some of it and it was distinctly underwhelming ā he just didnāt have the voice he had 50 years earlier. And that particular line seemed to get forgottenā¦..
Another thing I read about the recording was that there wasnāt a lot of interaction between him and the other musicians, which I think is absolutely amazing considering how the band and the singer seem to have a single set of thoughts and ideas going through all of them simultaneously. And he objected to the studio adding violins to some of the tracks, although I would put that down to Van just being a bit of a ā ā ā ā because it was done without consulting him (something heās highly skilled at, apparently), and they fit beautifully with the rest of the music and are about as far removed as possible from the syrupy crap that you usually get from studio violins.
Shame no live footage of this, some awesome sound going around
George Baker Selectionā¦.
Has there ever been a 2 hit wonder band with such a discrepancy between the ācoolā one of Little Green Bag and this decidedly āuncoolā drivel of this song?
Try:
Dead Or Alive - Spin Me Round and Brand New Lover
or
Flock of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away) and Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)
Another band that comes to mind is Sparks.
This town aināt big enough for the both of us, killer song,
When Iām with you, pretty lame.
Thoughts @Albert_Thurgood ?
