Another great track. That is such a brilliant album and it just kind of came out of nowhere. I like a lot of his other stuff as well, but Astral Weeks is a clear class above anything else. There’s not a weak track on it. My personal favourites are the title track and Ballerina, but I listen to all of them. And with a scratch band, not a permanent backing group. I’ve read about the recording of it, and the consensus seems to be that the bass player (proper double bass, not the electric abomination) was the leader and set the tone, and for me listening to the bass line on every track is always a delight.

Love the album. Not sure you’d be able to get away with the last few words of Cypress Avenue today, though…

The opening lines (lyrics) of the title track are extraordinary, straight out of the blocks (actually, all the lyrics are). Poetry.

Sweet thing, young lovers. Quality.

He performed Astral Weeks and Moondance at the Hollywood Bowl I guess about 8 years ago. I listened to some of it and it was distinctly underwhelming – he just didn’t have the voice he had 50 years earlier. And that particular line seemed to get forgotten…..

Another thing I read about the recording was that there wasn’t a lot of interaction between him and the other musicians, which I think is absolutely amazing considering how the band and the singer seem to have a single set of thoughts and ideas going through all of them simultaneously. And he objected to the studio adding violins to some of the tracks, although I would put that down to Van just being a bit of a ā– ā– ā– ā–  because it was done without consulting him (something he’s highly skilled at, apparently), and they fit beautifully with the rest of the music and are about as far removed as possible from the syrupy crap that you usually get from studio violins.

George Baker Selection….

Has there ever been a 2 hit wonder band with such a discrepancy between the ā€˜cool’ one of Little Green Bag and this decidedly ’uncool’ drivel of this song?

Try:
Dead Or Alive - Spin Me Round and Brand New Lover
or
Flock of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away) and Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)
