…and another one.
You can find all these on the Justice for the 34 youtube account
With the prodding of its IOC owners, WADA is reluctantly going to investigate those associated with the Salazar Nike Oregon Project.
What institution can be prodded to investigate the tainting of the anti-doping system through the injustices to the E34.?
So, Essendon has a history of dodgy dealings dating back to the 19th century, as told in yesterday’s HS
The Essendon Football Club trainer who was a quack doctor, drug fiend and serial crook
One of the Essendon Football Club’s first trainers was a quack doctor, con artist, drug fiend, rapist, burglar and suspected murderer.
The colourful life of Carl von Ledebur is the subject of the latest free episode of the In Black and White podcast.
Von Ledebur claimed to be a doctor and injected the pulverised testicles of animals into patients, supposedly to boost testosterone and other hormones.
The strange story has come to light thanks to Melbourne writer and historian Michael Shelford delving through old police files and newspapers.
“I think he’s one of the more horrible characters I’ve ever come across,” says Shelford, the creator and guide for Melbourne Historical Crime Tours.
“But it doesn’t make him any less entertaining from a historical point of view. “Mostly I think he was a psychopath.”
Carl von Ledebur, also known as Charles Rowell, arrived in Melbourne in 1883 carrying a sword on his hip, bragging that he hailed from a wealthy, aristocratic German family.
By the time he was hired as the trainer for Essendon in 1891, he had already served significant jail time for burglaries.
Shelford says it was before the era of coaches, and trainers were a new concept.
“You could almost say that in some ways he had some of the roles that a coach would have today,” he says.
Von Ledebur presumably did a decent job as trainer, because Essendon’s 1891 team won their first ever VFA premiership under his care.
But von Ledebur apparently continued his criminal caper while trainer at Essendon, and was arrested three weeks after the final game that year for repeatedly stabbing an Essendon shopkeeper during a bungled late-night robbery.
Luckily for him, a jury found the shopkeeper’s wife’s identification unreliable and he was acquitted.
His name cleared, von Ledebur continued as trainer at Essendon, who won three VFA titles in a row in 1891-1893 under his care, and a fourth in 1894 after he left.
After leaving, von Ledebur immediately set up a thriving business in Tasmania as an “electrotherapeutical medical practitioner”, adding “Dr” to his name.
“That was actually treating people’s various ailments through electricity – galvanic batteries, giving them shocks, running electric currents through their bodies,” Shelford says.
While it’s unclear if von Ledebur conducted his controversial “medical” treatments on Essendon players while trainer at the club, Shelford suspects he did.
“I would assume that he was probably using something similar with the Essendon team as well,” he says.
Soon afterwards, von Ledebur started spruiking a strange new treatment for disease – “hypodermic injection of organic liquids extracted from glands”.
Animals’ testicles were pulverised with a mortar and pestle and the resulting fluid was then filtered and injected into patients.
LOL
Oh great… now the mud will never wash off.
I hope James Hird apologises for this one.
It is very presumptuous to refer to this as quackery. For all we know, bollocks-juice could have been state-of-the-art medical practice back then, or a potent source of vitamin C.
More assumptions. He should apply for a job with ASADA. (They could start doing cold cases )
Guilt by association.
It’s therefore reasonable to ‘assume’ that Geelong, Gold Coast and Melbourne are guilty of quackery and drug fiendishness by association with Dank.
Wonder if Dank is checking his family tree?
TB 4 has orphan drug status here and in the US as a potential miracle drug for a couple of rare diseases.
^citation required.
FDA site, orphan drugs for 2 rare diseases, identified as epidermolysis bullosa(skin) and neurotrophic keratopathy ( eyes).
TGA site refers to arrangement with US, under which it adopts US orphan drug status.
Think designation as orphan drug provides for some form of government funding, perhaps in clinical trials on those diseases - on the basis that otherwise not worthwhile to commercially develop for such a small percentage of the population.
Also, some info on the site of a patent holder. RegenerRx
www.regenerx.com
UK may be involved in similar trials for those diseases/TB4.
Thanks. That is interesting. I would not have tipped Tb4 would be useful for either of those diseases. It must reduce keratinisation - which is not exactly helpful for people in contact sports.
Rachael Sporn (sister of Kieran) is a member of Global Athletes - led by Rob Koehler, a former senior WADA official- calling for fundamental changes to WADA, including a more independent judicial system and a role for athletes.
She could look closer to home, but then, she is an Athlete Education Presenter for ASADA.
The Herald Sun must be hard up for stories to dredge that one up. Altho’ I know some people who will absolutely get off on that with their slags about us and drugs in the good old days. I will tell them to shove it!
I’ve been reading the Ziggy report.
Warner made this public.
Blitz doesn’t need the Exec Summary, just the facts. First instalment already published here, so here’s the second instalment.
From the Report of the UEFA Control Ethics and Disciplinary Body in the 2016 Sakho higenamine case:
Para 19
- It is clearly not possible for anyone -laboratory, disciplinary body, football player or otherwise - to know whether or not Higenamine is a prohibited substance just by reading WADA’s prohibited list.
Para 47
- The identity of prohibited substances should not be a secret. The CEDB concludes that athletes have a legitimate expectation that they will be able to determine what is on the prohibited list.
One of the factors finding in favour of Sakho.
The CEDB was scathing of WADA scientific procedures on other counts and accepted counter scientific evidence as to whether higenamine fell under a generic heading.
WADA did not appeal - not wise to take on such a powerful European sports body. On the other hand, if it’s the AFL, take out the team…
Once again the Ziggy Report mentions nothing at all about Dank and Robinson being cleared by the AFL to resume working at the EFC or their previous working relationships at the Gold Coast Suns.
So what responsibility or any responsibility does the AFL own for what happened? Talk about lining up the ducks!
