They’ll get sponsors but to the tune of $15 million? No way.
The Chair of NA stepped down.
Previously there was talk of sponsorship by a gambling company.
Globally, athlete teams may need to be consulted on sponsor deals, including at club level.
Phew. A much better idea compared with Hancock.
No moral or social objections there.
The athletes need to be prepared to take decent pay cuts then. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. It’s all well and good saying no to sponsors but you have to be prepared for the worst if no suitable funding is forthcoming. Some sports obviously have better sponsorship options which makes it hard for sports like netball that struggle
The gambling advertising in sport is ■■■■■■■ gross.
It is a part of why i watch less of it. It is destroying our young men.
I remember coaching U16 bastkeball and the boys were talking about the odds for the footy on the weekend.
If the AFL players agreed to take less income, but rid gambling from the AFL. That would be a cause i would support.
Especially as it impacts so many current and past AFL players.
It wasn’t taken up, for whatever reason.
So they can’t be smeared on that account
How does the pay work out at club level?
Would the players be earning more at that level?
How many national commitments a year?
you also can’t pick and choose who sponsors the aussie cricket team than run off to another country and personally pocket from a questionable organisation/country.
All well and good to say you don’t want australian cricket to be associated with x, y and z, but you can’t then go and work for an organisation that’s just as bad albeit in different social causes.
if you want to be bastions of moral justice, you’re actually gonna have to man/woman up and live by that code in all facets of life (i don’t mean personal cars and ■■■■) I mean don’t take ANY money from dodgy companies, don’t buy any brands that are from business’s that exploit cheap labour etc etc.
it’s a bit hard to take seriously people who want to use their platform for social justice, while they stand there with their desinger clothes from cheap/slavour companies, on their phones from said countries etc etc.
Perfectly said. The whole thing.
I hope they were able to raise their massive concerns on their Chinese made Apple iPhone. Oh wait… what about China’s human rights record with the Uyghur population in western China? Better get rid of the phone.
I guess we will soon have to scrap all night games across all sporting competitions too. Who or what is going to power up the stadium lights? They’ll be ethical objections to the form of energy being used. Are they all driving to the venues/stadiums in their electric vehicles? How are they going to be powered up? They got their wind farms set up in their backyard?
How are the cricketers, netballers etc going to travel overseas for their next tour? Planes will be out of the question (oh no, carbon footprint) so they’ll need to think of other alternatives. I guess they’re going to have to be self-funded now too considering the lack of money.
Good luck. Bunch of hypocrites = the lot of them. And as for the moral crusaders defending it? You’ll need more than luck.
Change is hard
I hear this all the time. Unless you can take a stand against everything bad then you are a hypocrite. You stand for what you can. It’s not possible to stop everything bad but why not do what you can? I think actually what happens here is people get offended, they don’t like to have the reality of the world we live in brought out in the open. Better to turn away and point the finger and name call people who dare declare the problems we face.
Seriously I’m amazed at everyone rushing to defend these poor millionaires and climate vandals. Gina will be fine. Better had she paid her ■■■■■■■ mining royalties, not launched a coordinated political campaign against it (plus the carbon tax) and then maybe I could listen to her. Seriously people, Gina is not your friend, she does not give a ■■■■ about us.
In their private lives, athletes are not forced to wear their sponsors labels.
They get to choose, to the extent possible, what they spend their money on and the country of origin - but try living without anything made in China.
And if you are an athlete in any competition that requires plane travel, you have no choice.
Some of the posts on here are straight plagiarism from Newscorpse.
Love a bit of a selective moral crusading.
We’ll do a bit where we can, when it suits us… but when it doe$n’t we will turn a blind eye.
Sounds like a few are readying themselves for a return back to the Stone Age. Better stop using the WiFi on your Chinese made phones, computers or tablets then to access online forums.
The Carbon footprint was designed by a bunch of BP Pr executives for this exact reason. Get us arguing and blaming each other while they deflected attention from the fossil fuel industry destroying the planet.
No one was saying we need to go back to the caves, a modicum gradual planed change back at the time of Kyoto would’ve worked.
Seriously by name calling and playing the carbon footprint game, we are doing their dirty deeds for them
Climate change will send us back to the Stone Ages moral crusade or or not if we don’t pull out head out of our ■■■■ and face it.
Unless of course you’re a billionaire
The climate is definitely changing on Earth. Just as it has continued to change and evolve in the 4-5 billion years the planet has existed. And will continue doing so long after we are all gone.
Ice Ages, Neoproterozoic Era, Medieval Warm Periods … etc etc … what were the excuses then?
Take it to the climate change thread.
i’m not one for the plane stuff it’s too far down the path for me.
there is a funny radio clip going around on social media atm I think it’s from new zealand and a young climate change activist.
I’m guessing it was a set up and knew she’d been, but one of her issues was plane travel and unless it was necessarily travel, no one should be travelling by plane, the example that was used was fiji.
they then asked her when was the last time she went on a plane. she said a few months ago, then they asked her where she went, fiji (hence the i reckon they knew she was a hypocrite).
generally the ones who are screaming the loudest are the ones who want others to live by their standards, while they don’t.
always reminds me of religious people esp in america, the loudest ones using religion to bash anyone and everyone are usually the ones not living by their code and generally have their ■■■■■ stuck in something or someone they shouldn’t.
Pay at Suncorp League level is pretty good and still would be amongst the highest in female sports in Australia with the average wage for contracted players being around $70k although some earn as little as $40k and the marquee players on $100-150k. They are living well beyond their means though as the revenue generated currently doesn’t cover it. It falls away massively at second tier which is your State league level with most players getting next to nothing and many going back to their local or amateur clubs for easy coin. Even that’s not great though as at my local club the absolute stand out player in the comp is on about $100 a game whereas we have several footy players on well over $1000 a week
So @Aceman and some others seem to think that it is ok for celebrities to advertise and hence endorse products or corporations that they actually don’t like.
Wasn’t there a certain cricketer who could not wear a sponsor logo due to his religious beliefs, not sure many had a problem with that. Lang Hancock was an evil racist thug and I would never wear his name on anything, and I do not expect an indigenous person would want to either.
Do we from now on, select teams and exclude those who object ?
And no mistake Gina is as bad as her father, just not as publicly vocal for obvious reasons.
If anyone here has dealt with Woodside or been to Karratha, their credentials as environmental vandals are first-class.
