State of the game

I get to perhaps one game a year.
I was lucky enough that yesterday's game was that one game.
Wow.
I felt privileged watching Jake Carlisle do things that few can do
I felt privileged watching Dyson Heppell pick himself and the team up in the last quarter and say we are not going to loose this.
I felt privileged listening to the lovely lady behind me count down the seconds to the point when we knew we would win.
I felt privileged sitting with two passionate Essendon supporters and sharing this amazing game with them.
Seriously.....you guys that live in Melbourne....and have access to this week in and week out....need a reality check.
I would give anything to be able to support our boys every week.

Reality check, jake won't kick 8 every week, we won't win every week...what will be left is a poor spectacle

You're going for the spectacle?
May I suggest the Harlem Globetrotters

There's been plenty of games earlier this year I would have come away from and thought something similar. There have been some truly ugly spectacles, and on the whole I don't think the game is as entertaining now as even 5 years ago. But gee, I'm flabbergasted that of all the games that could have been picked out it's yesterday's game that get's the gong. Have to tell you Clone_Hirdy, if you think the game yesterday was dull you'd have been suicidal at some of the games earlier in the season.

For the record I think it was a cracking game yesterday, particularly the second half.

People freak about short kicks and sideways even backwards play. It IMO is because it’s not what people are used too. I’m guessing clone hirdy probably thinks soccer is boring. To me the game evolves and the current form is simply evolution . So I have adjusted my expectations and even what I appreciate in a good game. Now it’s like a chess game. I like keepings off sometimes . Builds pressure and is risky but if executed is completely valid and interesting. So I reckon all thd doubters just need to chill and find enjoyment is what is still a great contest.

It actually annoys me when supporters scream “kick it forward” like a pack of weekend warriors with no idea.

That's not fair.

The game used to be more watchable.

I can't believe anyone disagrees with this.. More aerial contests etc

I'm sorry but I can't agree with this....watchable????
WTF?
I don't give a ■■■■ about watchable.
I want to see a contest.....I want to see us able to compete, to adjust, to win when we really should not have.

I still play footy at a decent level in NSW, and i for one don't like where they are taking the game. I don't mind the switching back or setting up for an attack. I do not like the constant flooding though. Watching Melbourne and StKilda play is horrific. I did not think our game v's the dogs was the worst i have watched this year, even though disposal was terrible. Any team that Roos coaches is normally pretty hard to watch.

I think it more comes down to the bottom teams previously allowed the top sides to run riot and that it was worth watching to see them get torn apart, some great skill and football on show. Now the bottom teams are just trying to hold on, negating is more of a target rather than trying to win. This is the problem. I cant stand 30+ people in the F50/D50. I dont like watching a tagger ruin a great player and not get a touch. i would rather see Ablett get 50 awesome disposals, than idiot Mcafer? get 30 tackles, and 1 handball.

I would love to see a zone introduced where 3 players must be in each zone at a time. Otherwise the Roos style may take over further. Negate the team so they score nothing, then just kick 6 goals and you can win the game. That is just garbage, just because the scores are close doesn't make it a great game of footy. The way to solve this is with the chip game and constant switching.

Anyway my 2 cents, not a fan of the bottom teams, watching the top ones go at it is still pretty good.

BTW: $50 or so to get me and the wife into GWS, and the $10 hot dog is definitely way to high. So i 100% agree with that.

I can't believe that it has taken this long for someone to agree with what I would consider the obvious!

Well I am going to be one out and agree with Clone_Hirdy. Last week I watched the Chooseday game which happened to be a 1999 game between Essendon and North Melbourne. Carey kicked 10 goals and Lloyd seven, Essendon kicked something like 24 goals and N.M twenty. It was an exciting open game with no flooding.

i think most of the detractors on this topic must be too young to remember what a great game it was before the Footscray coach worked out how to beat the bombers in the only game they lost in 2000.i wonder if he realised how destructive his legacy would be.

Was going to say something similar. Definitely something of a golden age.

Still, there was plenty to like about yesterday's game.

To be fair, there is a reason they show those games now and not fitroy v bears replays.

So yeah, turn afl into netball, ■■■■■■■ genius idea.

You're entitled to your opinion, but you're wrong.

agree with op its getting worse, I no longer watch neutral games just Essendon games tbh.

I can’t watch anything that is not Essendon. If it wasn’t for Dream team and supercoach, regular AFL spectators would have well and truly tuned out.

Yeah, you're right. I also remember sitting through a lot of rubbish games back then.

Yeah, this is a good point. I used to watch a lot of non-EFC games. Now I just check the scores every now and then.

theres 1 simple rule that needs to be introduced.

when a tackle is made no player from either team is allowed to pile in on top and play stacks on the mill. That way the umpire has easy quick decision as to holding the ball or  incorrect disposal(if that's a rule) or held to him ball up.

if a player from either team joins in on the ground a free kick shall be awarded against the players team that joins in.

1 on 1 footy

leave me out of zones

as someone said flooding is just a way not to concede big scores!

Personally I'd rather watch netball than rugby union. And it not the short skirts. (Well not only anyway)

I don't get how people swarming a tackle can affect the umpires decision to say, right you've had 5 seconds to get rid of it, you took on the player, you get pinged for holding the ball.
