Tasmania - ANNOUNCED

Collectors Items in years to come.

And for that reason I’m thinking of buying some Tasmania Devils merch.

Yep, that’s certainly my best guess as well.

The AFL absolutely 100% do not want a 19th team in a small low-growth market that players won’t want to move to and which will necessitate a weekly bye. If they were going to have a 19th team, it’d maybe be a third Sydney or WA side.

By demanding a ridiculous overengineered new stadium they hoped to price Tassie out of the market. They underestimated the willingness of Tassie pollies to throw taxpayers money at the problem with quite that degree of verve and enthusiasm.

Same.

But they also want that Tassie government gravy train to continue so they couldn’t just say “no”.

A $950 million stadium funded by state gov, private investors, federal gov & AFL…but people think if it isn’t built hundred of millions could be poured into hospitals, healthcare, TAS education, building schools etc…

It won’t. The Royal Hobart and healthcare in Tassie is on its knees and has been for many years, well before the thought of an AFL team was talked about. What has been done to fix over past 20 years? Same applies for the education system.

If the licence fails I guarantee residents will still be talking about the broken health and education system in TAS and lack of funding with or without a professional football club & stadia.

nah they just need to invite china to finish up their port and fairy terminal development. then the fed govt would commit to 100% funding by the end of the week

bang on

with an aging population there’s fk all new money coming into the state to be able to invest more in health. and if educated young people leave the state because there’s fk all keeping them there then what good does more education investment do for them.

is a stadium the panacea for this? of course it isn’t. but it might be better than just staying in a death spiral and hoping things improve

Build a roofed stadium or else is still so stupid from the AFL, Tassie would a genuine home ground advantage playing in the cold windy weather there. Are they going to put that same build a stadium with aircondtioning like the 2022 Qatar WC or else clause on a potential NT, cos you know the weather gets ■■■■■■■ hot there?

roofed stadium gives the option to host events though which is part of the sell

Ok cool, but that’s not the AFL’s place. That’s a government thing

You gotta think that the roofed stadium is more so for getting people to the game and tv rights no one wants to watch a mud soaked game week in week out.
Also wouldn’t the influx of tourism brought in by AFL and concerts at the stadium provide long term economic benefit to the state

I don’t think that will be an issue because NT will never get a team

more people will go to games under a roof, it’s just a fact

so while I agree, it makes sense from the perspective of growing the fanbase

Absolutely but I’d imagine behind the scenes that Cricket Tasmania are against the roof as it was hoped that they would be co-tenants but it also means that a test would never be played there. I do think the tourist thing for footy is a bit overstated too as Tasmania would likely have over 25k of the tickets that are locked in for locals and like Geelong games I can see the opposition getting about 500 tickets tops

Keep sending Norf down there with a plan to relocate.

how many people would actually go down to Tassie for a test match though

Yes, but there is a $10 administrative fee
