But the hawks Essendon match earlier in the year was a cracker.
Nuetral supporters, limited tickets, covid rules (had to wear a mask) kept out the majority of bogans that made the hawks game a cracker.
I don’t think there were many cases in tasmania at the time either.
The whole stadium clause as part of the Tassie team’s entry into the AFL tells you everything you need to know. It’s not unconditional, therefore they aren’t 100% behind it. IMO they knew this would be a stumbling block, so the AFL inserted it into the agreement so that if it didn’t get up, they weren’t the bad guys. It’s all on the State Government.
Had an indigenous museum of sorts as its centrepiece, was all about cultural precinct, opening it up for locals and enriching the place. Govt originally backed it - why wouldn’t they, they could take all the credit like they do with all Mona’s success - but from memory then opened it up to other more generic proposals, jammed it all up, probably got wind of a possible AFL licence etc. in other words, farked it and here we are.
A wrap around of 23k the stands are tiny in height so barely block any wind. Again similar to Launceston which that game earlier this year was a disaster.
The hawks can play there coz they are a rich multi million dollar business with 70k members back in Melbourne and swimming in money, they don’t need a good and modern facility to be viable and bring in fans long term.
Backfiring on the afl means that there would be a team in Tas. They simply don’t want a Tasmanian team. They want to take for granted that kids will continue playing AFL in similar volumes to current levels. The problem there is that the game has been in decline in Tas. For everyone that says there isn’t the volume of talent to support the current number of clubs, if this falls through, there will be less talent available. Tas will end up a non afl state and kids that could’ve ended up playing will choose other sports.
I’m prepared for it to fall through. I’ll be pretty devastated about it, but I’ve always known the AFL are the problem and that they’d happily cut off their nose to spite their face. I’ll probably give up following football altogether if it fails.
The league were practically gifted GWS’s ground and got upgrades to GC, and Adel Oval via State money. Fuckem. They, and clubs, shouldn’t be getting any special government treatment.
It was two fold. They inserted the stadium clause and then demanded that the clause be amended to include the roof once they realised that it might have legs.
As above. They are playing in stadiums that are only partially grandstanded. Big gaps. Wind blows through. New stadium, Just like every other non roofed stadium, cuts the wind out. Rain? Too bad, it’s a winter sport being played in one of the driest cities in Australia.
Hobart gets down to a daily minimum of 5.2 and a daily max of 12.6. Which is cold, I’ll grant, but I wouldn’t say it’s that much colder than Melbourne’s 5.8/13.4. I wouldn’t mind a biting cold winter, Iceland-style, but it’s mostly just a bit chilly.
It was Tasmania’s own government taskforce that said the team would require a new inner city stadium with a roof to be competitive and viable financially. This was back when the afl wasn’t even wanting to expand.
It’s a masterful twist from the people to say the big bad afl tried to sabotage it and railroad the Tasmanian people and government and did so coz they never wanted it. It’s simply untrue, why else would the league be pouring 320 million into footy in the state including around 20 mill of their own money into the stadium, something no other sport in the country ever does!
Launceston is built pretty much the whole way around, if the stands aren’t high enough the ball gets caught in the wind. It even can to a degree at the mcg and you won’t get any higher stands than that.
