North moving down would permanently secure their longterm viability. I just don’t see them lasting in Victoria longterm.
But what about all the people who already have an AFL team (i.e. most, if they are already interested, and it’s NOT Norf)? Would they be able to bring themselves to follow a transplanted (opposition) team? Not sure I could.
AFL in China. With the Chinese Government’s latest distrust and unease around the Australian Government, I cannot see games happening any time soon.
I think this year, gave the AFL a huge financial shock and a kick up the pants. They have really pulled their heads in terms of financial cuts across the board. For example their staff have been cut by over two thirds.
We’ll wait and see how this plays out with the clubs and as things pick up so or; things may stay similar to now.
Yeah i think so, north are a team most people are ambivalent about. Once they have a few local players, coaches, presidents etc tasmanians will see it as their own team. People might be reluctant at first but once they have a full local team, media and hype around say their first finals series people will jump on. Plus all the kids will buy into it which will convert a few parents.
How many millions were Norf offered to move to the Gold Coast? IIRC if was something like $20m, and they knocked it back. What has changed since then, that would make them consider a move to Tasmania any time soon?
What’s tassie a 30 minute flight, football state, already play games there, increasing their pathetic supporter base. A much more attractive offer than moving to Queensland. That being said i think their members need to vote at over 70 percent or something in support if relocating. The afl and other clubs would need to vote to push them down there which i think of 17 other clubs the majority would as it’s better for the game.
Was going to stay they will draw in all types, even if not necessarily purely for the team at the start:
- Parochial taswegians who will put their state first
- Football purists who just love footy and will follow them as a second team just to attend regular games
- Other club fans who while they won’t adopt them, will want to see their own team play, and maybe a hated enemy get thrashed. Who doesn’t like seeing Fark Carlton get thrashed
- 5 out of 7 of the current Norf supporters will follow them. It’ll be better than what they currently.
- New supporters will be able to follow their own team and build history, hopefully lots of kids coming through.
That last one is where their future will come from. All of that is stronger in an original team, but it probably won’t matter longer term if it is a relocation.
And all in a state where they actually love their footy. It wouldn’t be like the recent money pits.
Tasmania will never enter the AFL because they are unable to pay their way through members, gate receipts, sponsorship, corporate support etc, etc etc - Finally, I doubt that players would want to live in Tassie long term for both societal reasons and for post-future opportunities.
Wot! Really .
Tasmania is in an opportune state to take on a team Hawthorn and North have been chomping on the bit and it is working
We love the Footy here, keep giving us games, you ■■■■■
l like to see the map of Tasmania.
Yet there’s 2 teams in Adelaide.
It’s not exactly oozing with cultural activity, nor blazing with corporate opportunities.
And I lived in the “City” there for 2 years
I suggest the AFL start a new Tassie club, then close Norf and send their eight best players to Tassie along with an inflation-adjusted $300,000 salary cap bonus and $6,000,000 to keep them solvent for a year or two before normal subsidies start.
Pump the good stuff into them, and within five years they’ll win the premiership.
The afl seem to have a formula on how they set up in non Victorian states. They like to have 2 clubs not just a single club… I think their plan is to set up a kind of manufactured rivalry in order to stimulate more interest within the state.
Would afl want the same setup in TAS?
With many Tasmanians already supporting traditional vic teams… Maybe some would swap allegiance… I wouldn’t… would there be enough support for even one team?
I have been to Tassie a few times (a beautiful state) but I have no idea how much interest/passion they have for the afl…
I would love to see a Tassy club formed…
Maybe or Tas Blitzers can tell us how it could work. Where would be the best place to establish the club?
Well, der.
Two clubs you use Launceston and Hobart, and scan for weapons on entry when they play each other.
So now there’s going to be two Tassie teams? OK.
Norf and… Dawks, Doggies, Saints…?
Not in this century.
Tassie Devils, NT Crocs. 20 teams 19 Rounds, Done.
