Tasmania - stole GWS media guy and $1B

I think the planned coach and major sponsor recently ran in to some legal inconvenience…

Bellerieve isn’t currently a great option.
Does the stadium need to be within walking distance of Hobart?
If it doesn;t that opens up a lot more options.
Because Marvel and MCG are so centrally located its good for people that travel to the footy.

From a Tasmanian perspective - ie those outside of Hobart, it would be better if it was on the other side of the bridge around Brighton due to cutting 30 minutes off travel for those living in other parts of the state. It would also make parking a lot easier.
But would need busses/transport for those from interstate.

Nothing was ever going to happen there though, albo talked about federally funding mac point 20 years ago and nothing come of it. The stadium needs to be close to the CBD to be viable.

The one thing i will concede is I liked the 2.0 option better, I think you need to build these things as a precinct as opposed to just a stadium. Not sure why that was knocked on the head.

Overall stadium builds are always unpopular, but history tells us the ones that work are inner city, suburban ones like Waverley, football park are a money pit for sporting codes/ teams.

It was absolutely happening. It got royally shafted by the Libs, and it didn’t take much to figure out why

Why?

For the last ■■■■■■■ time read this, then read about how there was a serious plan already into works stage back in 2012, kyboshed by the then Lib govt, followed by the MONA plan which started works before hodgeman and Co started making noise about apartment development which was all smokescreen for the stadium plan. It’s been rank from the get go. Some call it progress, it’s just corporate/govt ■■■■-acting with other people’s money and heritage, as usual.

Fugg Mac Point. York Park already holds 21,000 - with a little redevelopment that number could easily be doubled, at a quarter the cost of the Mac Point project or less. Fukk, if you even included a new rail link between Bofart and York Park, the York Park project would still come out cheaper !

And that impossible but very very possible dream would be incredible for the state. Shame they’ve got no transport money after paying foreign cities to house and use their new ships. And yet they keep voting the morons in, can’t bear the other option, and won’t even entertain the Greens. If ever there was a state that might experiment again with a Greens govt…

Also, if you need any evidence of how low this whole thing lies, Eric Abetz is the new, well first, ‘Minister for Macquarie Point Development’

No need to get nasty just because I have a different perspective. But if the stadium was such a dealbreaker, why vote Labor and contribute to the 70% of the population that voted for the major parties? Surely there were independent candidates to support if that was the main concern.

The reality is that Macquarie Point has been sitting largely idle since around the turn of the century, with numerous proposals floated over the years. The concept you mentioned didn’t emerge until at the earliest 2017 – well before the idea of a Tasmanian AFL team was even on the table. To me, this feels very similar to Docklands in Melbourne: it sat unused for decades until the stadium project finally got momentum going, and from there the wider precinct development snowballed around it.

Didn’t mean to be nasty, it’s just that we’ve been down this road before. If you actually read what I linked you will understand. And there are many more independent publications on the events. It’s rotten and the blame, as far as most people will be concerned, if it gets more rotten, will be on the backwards people of the backwards state. Which is bullshit.

The AFL and the State Govt and Labor can go ■■■■ themselves for this travesty.

What’s your proposal then for a financially viable football club that will attract interstate travelers to a modern state of the art stadium? Where would a stadium be located and what would be it’s features?

What would you put at Macquarie point instead? There might be too many politicians in the state to get anything done in adequate time coz of all the levels of bureaucracy things need to get through. I’m sure I read a story about a bridge development down there that was a bit similar to all this recently.

As I understand it Bellerive has been described as being in a residential area with limited prospects for further development. Having not been there don’t know this for certain.

No doubt York Park could be upgraded but I assume a presence in Hobart is essential. Not to mention the north/south issues.

Meh there are at least two issues per election.

Sometimes even more

No proposal, it’s a ■■■■■■■ stupid idea. And I’d put the MONA proposal right back where it was approved to be before they cut its legs out. What more do I need to do here? Nothing, I’m done.

Yeah but surely if someone is that passionate about it whereby they think corruption is involved, it’s going to cripple the state for decades and the sky is going to fall in, then you’d vote for a candidate that isn’t backing in the stadium.

No proposal as in you don’t want a Tasmanian team? Why would a footy fan not want a local team, it doesn’t make sense to me. You can still get on a boat and swan around Mona if you like, I’m sure you wouldn’t go 7x per year like the devils would provide either. No team means no afl to watch in Hobart and all the flow on effects for the local community.

You think the stadium was the impetus for Docklands? As opposed to the rafts of cheap land to build apartments on next to the CBD?

In fairness there’s probably more than one of those issues per election as well.
