That’s absurd.

EDIT:
York park (Launie) has gone from 15-17k crowds in the 00s to 12-13k now (with Hawks struggling.

Bellerive has gone from 12-13k to 10-11k now with Roos struggling.

50k is absolutely crazy pills.

Tassie suns wouldn’t work
Firstly we don’t get any

Secondly state teams don’t work down here. No different from Gold Coast. Why…

Our populations getting older, while at the same time there’s an exodus of young people looking for work on mainland. A tradie, designer most people in that industry can get double in some pls Cesar, ironically in south east Queensland more often than not.

Teams come down here only as there’s an established supporter for most teams. Leave that agreement, it’s where definite money comes in.

Everyone says Tasmania is a football state. It was. Name the last champ after Matthew Richardson to emerge. Tumbleweed. The collingwood bloke hat takes screamers?

Would cripple the economy which is just holding on as it is. Hospitals are bed less, education rate dropping, mental health unemployment all need addressing first. The pollies would look great at first and then dump it just as quick when goes bo0bs up.

As simple as it seems, the most of us aren’t.
The unwashed will go great let’s go, the tarp cost will blow the budget when they don’t, and they’ll be an another shell of a club sitting next to the devils, hobart devils basketball team etc.

And before you ask we sustain the hurricanes cause that’s when there is sun, international champions come down (we had Jofra last year) and it gets kids and ladies involved. Kids at the moment are going to basketball, hockey and soccer in droves after aus kick.

Plus I don’t want to see another generation of kids lost for essendon day one if it gets remotely viable. There’s one kid that goes for them outside of hawthorn in his year. My boy because I didn’t want him put up for adoption.

No.

Sorry for being rude before also.

Nup.

Play 3x games in the north, 3x games in the south per season, and not just Norths V GC or rubbish fixtures like that, have Essendon Play Geelong or Richmond V Carlton or Hawthorn V Collingwood once in a while, invest more, much more in junior and senior development and provide the infrastructure required to run viable competitions around the state. You know, treat Tasmania with a bit of respect rather than just continuing to take those taboo-lovin’ southern Victorians for granted.

I think it’s great! But try telling an 18yo to move there as opposed to Melbourne or Sydney.

There’s barely 100k that live in greater launceston. Maybe 3 or 4 travel from Melbourne. You wouldn’t get decent teams. Eddie would just roll over and can we let it go Gil before a little spooning.

And the bull$hit rivalry between north and south is still prevalent and significant as stupid as it is.

I doubt many from hobart would even travel based on pure childishness.

I love this state but it doesn’t deserve it. It’s a pollies job security or ticket to minister of department of silly walks.

Leave tassie aloooooooone

I like the sound of a Tassie team. It would be much closer for Dodoro to go poach players from, rather than having to go all the way to Queensland.

I’m interested in your views on the rivalry thing. I do understand that it’s a real thing, but surely if they actually got an AFL team, that would be exciting enough to override that? Maybe not straight away, but surely the state would unite around it? Although maybe it depends if they’re winning!

Anyone suggested the Van Demons yet?

@SMJ - Hobart got annoyed they didn’t have the hawks play down there (once they started dominating) so they got on the hustings for North instead. York park is way better than Blundstone and I recon most would agree if they went to both. Unless you where from hobart.

Ok that last bits a bit far fetched but I can tell you right now some Hobart city councillors used it as their ticket to get elected, then realised (or new in the first place) it wasn’t viable.

There will be a ■■■■ fight where they play and maybe some won’t travel on principle but if your launching a campaign your first port of call would be where do we play. Now obviously this would be a directive of the AFL but the uproar would be ridiculous. I happily travel to Hobart for the odd hurricanes game but some sectors, not that I’d know for sure, would be aggrieved a hobart team plays in launceston every now and then.

The petty stupid little arguments and carry on define how we are sometimes viewed by the rest of the country. I love it to bits and wouldn’t live anywhere else but as I’ve mentioned also in another post it has its frailties.

The rivalry is not as big as I’m probably making out but you still get dirty looks if you asked for a Boags in Hobart in some places.

This is a launceston opinion. @tassiehammer @tassieiceman etc al perhaps have a different take. I’m not necessarily having a go at some people making their own observations from a far, but when you don’t live down here and just go Tassie can have it, dust hands and start a new conversation I get somewhat bemused.

And the stats about growth can go he - our main source of growth seems to be overseas investors who drop in to buy up servos, take aways and the like and then bugger off when the profit to be had is had.

Interesting context. Thank you my friend

I’ve heard similar from a tassie bloke in regards to an A league team being introduced there and he said wouldn’t work because of the stupid rivalry between North and South and not to mention a few other factors

This should of happened years ago instead of the gold coast. 19 teams is way too many, in my opinion. It’ll work, but I reckon the AFL know the suns days are limited

I wonder how the success/failure of the expansion teams impacts the Tasmania thing.

If Gold Coast had been a huge success, would there be more push for a Tassie team?

I have the solution!

Add two new teams. One in Hobart, one in Launceston. 20 teams, no byes. Problem solved.:+1:t2:

And do we get a ready made team, or cast offs? Do we get a young team like we did GWS and suns and sit back expecting like we did GWS and suns?

It might live till the first window and if that fails, like dare I say it may have GWS and suns, it will be classified as all a big fk up now who do we blame. And you can bet a groat Fairfax and Murdoch will drive that and all the other juices bits.

There is a reason that polo playing fk is hesitant.

Sorry if I’m sounding narky.

Currently 26 Tasmanians on AFL lists. You would think you could entice a few back if appropriately incentivised.

This is our modern era Lloyd/Ridley moment!

(Except our only Tasmanian is Tommy Belchambers, so that probably wont work so well).

Jack Riedwolt wants a word with you. Cousin Nick as well. Grant Birchall can’t be bothered to talk to you , he’s too busy polishing all his premiership medals.
