Team named somewhere in this thread, but still [spec] vs Hawthorn Rd 1 2024

Soooo… there is a Jye Menzie in the forward pocket, plus one as sub, plus another as emergency.

Fair effort from the lad.

he’s pretty important (may have replaced Matt guelfi with him (AFL best 22 side) and forgot to change.

My minor tweaks

B: Andrew McGrath, Ben McKay, Zach Reid
HB: Mason Redman, Jordan Ridley, Sam Durham
C: Xavier Duursma, Will Setterfield, Nic Martin
HF: Archie Perkins, Harrison Jones, Jake Stringer
F: Jade Gresham, Kyle Langford, Peter Wright
Foll: Todd Goldstein, Zach Merrett, Darcy Parish
I/C: Ben Hobbs, Nik Cox, , Elijah Tsatas, Jye Caldwell
SUB: Jye Menzie

Well … not too far apart but I’d be hoping Menzie and Duz retain their spots as reward with a bit of loyalty given their efforts last season. Hepp starts until someone can clearly take his spot. And if Reid impresses in the pre seasons then Lav likely the one to make way. So for mine:

B: McG, Ben McKay, Zach Reid
HB: Redman, Ridley, Heppell
C: Durham, Merrett, Martin
HF: Perkins, 2MP, Gresham
F: Stringer, Langford, Menzie
Foll: Goldstein, Caldwell, Parish
I/C: Hobbs, Setterfield, Tsatas, Duursma
SUB: Cox

Draper and Harry probably need more time.

A lot of proposed teams going with Goldstein as sole ruckman, while BS clearly has a preference for two rucks.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

he needed two rucks with draper. did he play 2 rucks with Goldy at North?

Not sure, but the bloke is now 35.

Team balance ain’t ever a thought process of most blitzers best 22’s

Continually don’t have 7th defender in, won’t have appropriate mix of talls and smalls in fwds. Jam every mid on list into the side

As for 2 ruck strategy, Goldstein made note it was part of reason he chose EFC. We don’t want to play Wright in the ruck where it can be avoided so the 2 ruck scenario needs to occur. Goldy/Draper preferred obv so be interesting to see if stick with Goldy/Bryan

Maybe Brad Scott will be more flexible with Wright spending a few minutes in the ruck until Draper gets back.

Love Hep but the sooner we can replace him with a back flanker that has pace and good foot skills the better.

Because he can’t kick.

Expect to see Kelly on a HFF and Weideman at CHF

I’m not sure on what basis people are selecting Reid ahead of Baldwin. Baldwin has dominated at VFL level, and performed admirably when last given the opportunity at AFL level. Reid has been underwhelming at both levels IMO. Would love for Reid to step up at become the player we all hope he can be, but on current evidence Baldwin is streets ahead.

If it’s based on probable 22 rather than best, then the assumption may be that our perceived highest potential players will be pushed into the 22 (e.g. Cox last year).

I understand that it’s based on potential, but the leap in performance required for Reid to overtake Baldwin this year is unrealistic.

Pretty much Height & wanting to free up Ridley a bit.

Hawks have Reeves (Ruck) 210cm —Draper 205cm /Goldy 201cm
Meek 203cm / Chol 200cm - Reid 202-205cm
Lewis 199cm - McKay 202cm
Gunston 193cm - Ridley 195cm

Baldwin/Laverde 193cm

no its not.
Had Reid not got injured he would have been selected ahead of Baldwin last year after mediocre VFL games like Cox did. Reid he was put in as a forward ahead of Baldwin after half a match of VFL up forward in 2022 and Baldwin and Voss both had good form kicking regular goals.
Coaches want to get games into him. I’m more in camp of taking it slowly for Reid, but doubt we will.

Both players are pretty much the same age, and both have played 8 AFL games.

Both seem just as likely as each other to get a round 1 spot.

Unless you can tell me that every selection decision in 2023 made sense to you. Because Jake Kelly on a wing…

Scott had about 10 weeks where he could have picked Baldwin but didn’t last year. I don’t think he rates him anywhere near as much as Reid and Cox. I don’t think it’s that unrealistic. Scott has made “Kelly on the wing” realistic afterall.

FWIW I have Baldwin in my 22 currently.

Good recent discussion. I want Reid to start and learn. But I also want Baldwin in. Big, fit and good kick. Could he be a Crameri in the fwd line?
Or could he be the BBM we’ve been looking for?193cm and 97kg. Cripps style mid?
