The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

If we were to target 3, the question would be, who would we be looking to select?

I’d do it for Lalor but he could be on Richmond’s radar. FOS, Smith look like talents but shouldn’t be an area we are targeting.

Will the AFL give us an extra 10 minutes to match the bid like they did with Brisbane when we bid on Coleman.

What a farking joke that was

At the end of the day if two teams consider Kako worth spending a top 6 pick on then he is worth that pick. ATM we are desperate for excellent small forwards, if he costs us pick 9 (11) then he is worth it.

Would people, if they could go back in time, prefer that instead of Hobbs we picked up Lohmann? Would giving up pick 11 for him been worth it? Imagine we did that and then this year do the same for Kako and we had ended up with Kako and Lohmann as small forwards?

While I agree it would be nice if we could keep our pick and use that on another need and then use later picks for our NGA, but at the end of the day, if we cannot change our position I personally will not be overly upset, he is exactly what we need.

I honestly don’t think the move from 9 to 3 this year is justified by giving up a future first as well, compared to how much that difference would improve the list

Id consider it, chuck their second round in back at us and id do it. We get a gun, kako and a second rounder of theirs that will be pretty much a top 20.
But i dont think we will finsih bottom 4, we could look stupid if we do.

I agree with that. My issue is, we should be looking to get that first pick of ours well out of play for a Kako bid. We want 2 bites of the cherry, not simply have that pick dissolved by matching for Kako. I’d be happy for us to try and deal with WCE and see if we can trade 9 + our future first to get Pick 3 from them this year, and then look to match a Kako bid with later picks. That would be a great result.

So that would leave us with pick 3, Kako and nothing inside the top 20 next year.
I don’t like that at all.
I’d rather chance my arm that Kako isn’t bid on and then keep our first next year that should be at the real pointy end

We’ve been given a massive advantage by being able to match Kako at any bid. We need to milk the advantage for absolutely everything we can, just as every other club would. It is absolutely not enough to simply accept matching Kako with pick 9.

While Kako deals with a massive need, our list simply has too many holes to be complacent in how we deal with the Kako situation. We need to be creative so we get as much talent through the door as possible (and I’m sure we will be).

And if he is bid on?

Unless a club down the bottom stumps up a F1, we’re basically screwed because it would be absorbed by the bid.

Getting into this strong draft as a guarantee before the pick would be ideal.

If clubs are bidding on him it means he is rated highly in which case we just use our first on him and then have some picks later in the draft to get other players.
Would have zero problem getting Kano plus a couple of players in the second and third round this year and holding on to next years first

That’s stupid from cal. Giving up pick 9 and a future first to move up 6 places to allow us to match on a guy rated 15 before all the bullshit from other clubs that they’re gonna take him top 10? I hope we don’t fall for that. This is in an even draft too, where there isn’t even a set top 5.

Seems like he’s posting more and more clickbait/engagement stuff these days. Which I get is his job, but a bit disappointing

I’d do 9 and F1 for 3 and F2 or 9 and F2 for 3.

9 and F1 for 3 is too much IMO.

It would be ridiculous to absorb our first pick if we can avoid it. Every clubs gets ahead of their NGA picks or trades their first pick out if they can’t.

I’d be staggered if we stayed put and had the pick absorbed.

We don’t have any later picks.

So how does that work?

This is not right. We don’t have third and fourth round picks.

We can pick into the 5th, 6th, 7th round etc until we are done.

We will have round 5 and round 6 picks if we have the list spots open for them. Just not 3rd or 4th round at them moment

I understand the motivation, but I don’t love the idea of moving up at the expense of our F1. I am just not convinced we will take many steps forward next season and there is a chance that the F1 will land higher in the order than this year. I think you just have to do your work over the next few weeks to make sure you have a plan b in place if a bid comes. At least that is how I am looking at it.

If you move up you get to take who you take, you get Kako and you get no one in the first round next year. Technically you can trade back in next year, but you are just kicking the can down the road for a year.

If you stay put and there is no bid you get to take who you take, you get Kako and still have your 1st next year. Alternatively, if you stay put and a bid comes you can trade out for an F1 (and points), still take Kako and now you have 2 x 1st rounders next year to take another 2 talents or play around with.

You wouldn’t want a top 5 pick in this draft due to it being midfield heavy.

Not even to secure a Lalor or Langford type to fill the Stringer hole in the forward line?
