The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Dees were never really the worry.
St Kilda on the other hand…

I’m not a fan of the deal but if Dees play to a similar level next year it could definitely be worse.
Petracca/Oliver the big wildcards

Same same, though.
Made a huge gamble on someone bidding on him before 9.

For me, it feels like getting a first, a second and a third for pick 11 is pretty significant overs. There’s risk of course, but I reckon its a good deal no matter whether Melbourne were bluffing or not.

Technically even better as it’s a first and 2 2nds. Would like to see these extra “later picks” involved though. Hoping we aren’t giving up a future 3rd or something.

I’m not as annoyed as I was when I first heard it, provided an early bid on Kako was actually going to happen.

I have way over invested in this years draft so will take a while to recover if goes through, our rebuild can’t even just start already

Of course.

Throwing the kitchen sink at Harley Reid so we should all just nod. Watch him sign a contract in round 3 next year.

I dont mind it at this stage. More of a diverse pool of talent at least, some intriguing key forward prospects. Definitely compromised though with Northern Academy prospects.

Come on Henry, the noobermann gave you all the real changes at EFC over the last 2 years and a bit, the least you can do is clearly articulate what this one problem is that hasn’t materially changed.
If it’s anything other than The Board leaning on the footy dept to make a Final, please fill in the gaps for the unaware.

I don’t like it. Leaves us vulnerable to an early pick wiping out everything. Makes no sense to do this deal now imo. And by all reports 2025 draft looks middling compared to this one.

A fit dees squad will pay finals next year imo

Neither, also think everyone is buying into the best draft eva hype. Reality is, if the AFL didn’t change the rules mid season I don’t think people would be mad if we actually used 9 to pick Kako. Now we might get an extra first rounder out of it (potentially more), it just might not be in this draft. Plus, pretty much every player expected to be taken before 9 is a mid and I’m not sure we need another?

Agree with this. There’s always some bolters (Armstrong, Berry, Langford) and then those who come into the year highly rated but slide out as the year goes on Eg. Lemmey or Moir. Still a lot of water to go under the bridge yet.

While next years crop is looking stupidly compromised, between the compo picks, North’s assistance package picks and Father Son/Academy picks, this year also has its issues, it’s just very fortunate that it appears to be a deep crop which has grown as the year has gone on.

Hopefully next year the compensation for FA’s doesn’t impact the first 20 picks as much.

Bloody good point that is lost on most in the trade thread.

Up until 2 months ago we wouldn’t even have had access to Kako so the fact we will keep a first round and still gain a few picks in a deep draft is a good result all round.

but the rules did change, so it doesn’t matter, its about maximising value for essendon football club

There goes us drafting Armstrong or Shannahan.

Strange move. Wonder if they really do intend to go all in on Harley Reid.

That means Weideman is getting a contract. Unless we’re happy to have only 3 KF’s next year

But we’ve been playing Weid in the backline anyway and he’s been no good at either end, so what difference would it actually make if we couldn’t call on him?

We could well trade back in to get one. I wouldn’t be assuming anything just yet.
