The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Or neither.

Much rather re-rookie Baldwin, if we’re squeezed for list spots.

Same. Still a fan of Baldwin. Basically, anyone but Weid.

In combination it might be an interesting evening.

I think getting a heap of picks today may have hurt guys like Baldwin setterfield wide and Davey chances of staying on the list

As someone who considers himself a degenerate, I’m as staggered as I am disappointed that I never made that connection!

Are fox footy doing there live coverage show on Wednesday night

We need some draft gurus to start throwing some names at us for who we might target for our picks in the 40s. Draft just got interesting again.

A she was a ho-are
B she hit me

I know Aceman doesnt rate him but Vfl watchers what do you think of Hately.

Strong no. He’s the sort of player who takes you nowhere. Very good VFL player and I’m glad we got him on board there but he lacks the attributes at AFL level to warrant devoting a list spot to. Especially when you’re in our position with our list profile.

Having watched probably 80-90% of our games, its a pass.
Does really well at AFL level, but has struggled with the step up at 2 clubs already. Nothing to show that’s changed.

We already have Tsatas not getting a game, no room for him regardless.

The quintessential ‘tweener. Really strong at state league level, not good enough at AFL level. Just doesn’t have any standout athletic traits.

All these northern academy kids coming through in the next couple of years which we don’t have access to what happens to them if the Lions or Suns dont have list spots for them. How can they end up on an Afl list.

After today’s astute piece of business, we could well have a great draft.

Whether Kako gets a bid before 9 or not, we’ve now guaranteed three first round picks over two years. Furthermore, we’ve added a swathe of mid draft picks this year in a draft that has great depth and variety of player types. After the early bid matching, there’s every chance our picks are in the 30s and 40s.

Some drafts only have about 20 players I’d be willing to put on the list. This year’s draft has closer to 50 that I’d be happy with. And because there’s a great variety of players with strong talent, we’re likely to address some list needs this year.

Which in turn means we can hit next years draft looking to add high end talent, package picks to get right up the top of the draft for a generational type we’ve missed in recent times, or make a big play for a young megastar out west.

For this year, I’d be stoked with 3 or 4 of the following (who are a chance to be available mid draft):

  • Isaac Kako (the certainty matching a first round bid)

  • Kayle Gerreyn (KPF/RUC)

  • Lachie Jacques (mid size intercept defender)

  • Harry Oliver (tough and nice kicking small defender)

  • Faull or Shanahan (raw KPFs with deficiencies but also with strong attributes)

  • Hannaford or Alger (small forwards with speed)

  • Luke Urquhart (big bodied powerful mid/fwd)

  • Archer Day-Wicks (powerful mid sized X factor forward)

  • Zak Johnson (good all round mid)

I also like Nguyen and hope he’s in our list next year one way or another.

Easily. Being Academy listed just gives the Lions/Suns/etc the ability to match another teams bid (Like us with Kako).

If they choose not to match, that player goes to whatever team initially selected them.

Likely if they’re any good though, they’ll just make room to match the bids.

Would love to pinch Barrett off Port but I think they will definitely match any bid that’s around the mark unfortunately

Moraes I think can play a role at the next level, similar to NealBullen, and he will be on the boards at our picks but I wouldn’t be touching him with his skills and our list.

Hannaford might a shout but we’d need to trade back into the top 25 which will be competitive.

Gerreyne and Faull are the two I’d consider targeting for KP.

Oliver as a classy user with some steel.

Nguyen is shows more than the Davey’s did at the same age imo.

He’s a bloody good vfl player.
I would see no harm in throwing him in the mix for a SSP spot, but wouldn’t expect him to win it. Would be good to train against our midfield though in preseason.
He has shown he can be handy up forward at VFL level, regularly kicking goals.
Would likely only be midfield depth, and probably isn’t what we need.
If we offloaded Setterfield, Shiel and Stringer, then maybe he could be looked at as depth for midfield with bigger body.
I prefer we keep Setterfield over chasing Hatley. And Setterfield may be in the gun, or delisted and picked up in PSD to fill spots for bid matching.

From VFL - Hobbs, Setterfield and Tsatas all have had better games disposal wise, but Hatley has also had 27 and kicked 3 against dogs and kicked 4 goals against the Suns 18 disposals (played more forward as Shiel, Tsatas, Setterfield and Hobbs played that day).

Happy Hatley, O’Neill and Eckersley have signed on for VFL next year.

Now its closer to the draft and we have more idea where we are heading with picks listened to
lunchtime Catchup podcast with Cal Twomey:

number 1 aim - 2 first rounders this year.
no mention of Kako bid - most clubs would have around 10 - 15 mark.
small forwards are in fashion at the moment - Hawks finals.
Berry another small forward first round talent as well

(Most of the guys talked about we don’t have a chance now.)
Lalor surprised if he was still there at pick 9-11. never had preseason - elite cricketer, highly exciting prospect, leader, future captain, fend off and power.
Harry Armstrong best tall in the draft? efficient at Carnival, few bags of 4, long kick 55m and straight kick, a little like Jye Amiss / Jeremy Cameron, pretty athletic, highly talented. Could ahve built forwardline of Armstrong, Caddy, Kako for future.
Jack & Matt Whitlock in first round contention
Jobe Shanahan in first round contention 15-20 mark Dons have plenty of intel on him, Performance at VFL level was really good, with his efficiency could be a valuable player, could even be a defender too.
Alix Tauru - could be anything started in the 20’s now top 10, rocketed up the boards, can play forward, back and midfield, competitive, and untapped talent, James Sicily comparison is real, powerful agile can play either end.
Toby Travaglia - half back leader, co captain, can run all day, some VFL experience, plays a bit like Will day as a kid,
Bo Allan - some seem him third defender, others see him as a big bodied midfielder that would start back in first year or two. WA’s best prospect played well in peel thunder side.

Most clubs have a fairly similar top 20 - but there will be a variance of where they are rated. Previously most clubs had guys ranked in the same area of draft board.

There’s not that much separating 6 - 20, that’s why the large majority have often talked about using future first round pick from next year to buy back in to this year for another selection.
At this point pick 15 in this draft is going to be better than pick 8-9 of next years draft.

Kako - say 8 live picks, 4 - 5 players locked in that group, would have had to get past Dees and Saints. Odds were in Essendons favour.
He would have played 20 games for most AFL teams this year.
“Dons go wako for Kako”

What names in consideration later in the draft if Essendon trade back in.
Harrison Olliver - tough competitive half back, can shut down players.
Cooper Hynes - great option as well, big bodied midfielder gone forward kicked goals
Talls - Matt Whitlock, Jonty Faull
Jesse Dartoli - smaller player, competitive, highly focused, half forward / midfielder, stepped up in big times in games. Dominant games for Northern Knights.

Essendon very much draft focus -
Trades could be a couple of little things, Clubs have $$ and means hold cards close to chest, last year Chol happened late, Gunston happened late, Ginnivan happened mid way trade period.
Stringer and Laverde - depends on other teams wanting them, maybe if they feel they are close to final wins and missing piece, can get more desperate.

hynes does some nice things here

like the way oliver attacks it the shape of his left foot

reckon jacques’ kicking looks just a little floaty, ball drop looks to have a sudden and late rotation which i don’t really like. brave in the air though.

i really like nguyen
