The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

I know Armstrong and Shanahan are forum favourites but I like Faull for his competitiveness and reckon he’d be a great get if he lasts to our pick - which I doubt. Gerreyn from all ive seen and read might be a good option also.

With the later picks we have I think we can afford to get a bit more adventurous with one. Otherwise, stick to the plan and draft for needs.

It will also be interesting to see if the club has a key forward on its list of needs or if it thinks wright jones Draper or possibly cox can fill that second tall role next to caddy or not

Jesse Dattoli 179cm foward/mid

Dattoli has a will to win that comes from a fierce inner drive. He has strived to be a footballer from a young age, studying other players who have reached the top level and copying their work ethic, and will soon join the top level. Clubs mainly see him as a small forward who can have an impact in the midfield, and he has confidence to be able to do most of his damage as a ball-getting midfielder who is good overhead. He stepped up in some big games late in the season when he returned to the Northern Knights.

Cal has him at 21 if we can get a pick in that range we take him

I’m not 100% sure but Jesse might be the grandson of my mums uncle

edit - I was correct his dad is Vince.

He also has a couple of good midfielders in his corner already. His dad Vince was the long-time coach of Carey’s firsts team, including its 2019 premiership side, which included Gold Coast pair Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson (picks No.1 and 2 that year) and Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos (pick No.4 the following season). Dattoli was in year seven that year but recalls in detail the road to that flag.

This is crazy hope he gets drafted

When is this date
period?

Between Nov 27 - Feb 19

Dear Rosa… there is one thing Essendon don’t need is a forward/midfielder… lol… we have done this to death and it isn’t what we need.

We need specialist forward who is fast and has x-factor or a specialist midfielder who is big bodied and brutal at the contest.

Wouldn’t mind a power key tall forward to support Caddy either.

No more in between players or utilities.

Jobe Shanahan

Could trade Melbournes F1 for Richmonds pick 18 or GWS pick 16

If reported 6 or 7 figures settlement with ex “draft guru “ comes out of clubs soft cap, we will not have enough to pay for development staff.

Would be absolute crap if it was to come out the soft cap

Cal has him around 12 to 14 I believe he said in the latest gettable I think he’s off the table to us

Where are these so called forward/mids that we have have drafted over the years?

I dont think we have a glut of forward mids, but I do agree we have a glut of players we have been playing as forward-mids to various levels of success.

Perkins, Stringer, Caldwell, Hobbs, Shiel, Gresham, Alwyn Davey Jnr, Martin.

I’d only rate Martin and Caldwell as quality enough to rotate through, whilst Perk has shown the potential.

… or “adventurous picks”.

We’ve probably got room for a half back flanker who can move into the midfield.

Completely agree. Not sure who the previous poster is referring to but I can’t think of a single actual mid/fwd on our list. Perkins is a forward who we’ve tried to force into the midfield and it hasn’t worked. Caldwell is a midfielder that we keep shifting forward because our rotations suck.

To me the mid/fwd in the modern game is mostly a midfielder but he has actual forward craft and can do real damage when he’s resting forward. They tend to be the superstars of the comp like Petracca, De Goey, JHF etc. In this upcoming draft the guys in that category are expected to be top 10 picks like Langford, Smillie, FOS and to an extent Ashcroft.

Perkins was 100% drafted as a forward/ mid!?!

Fair enough, but he hasn’t developed into that at AFL level so we still don’t have one on our list. And that’s one player. Plus its worth pointing out that Archie missed his entire top age season due to covid so we were draft him on very limited info.

Granted and not disputing the premise of your post but also agree that we can’t keep shoe-horning mids into the forward line because ■■■■■■■■ Dodoro flooded our list with B grade mids which I think was the point trying to be made.
