I guess that’s my point here. Your multiposition player needs to be outstanding at his one wood, then the secondary position just becomes a bonus that adds versatility. You don’t want to end up with a kid thats just okay at a bunch of things. Nic Cox is looking to be that at this stage.
Laverde. Sorry being a bit cheeky, but wasn’t he supposed to be a big bodied mid with forward craft? He would run a bit in the mid and kick goals until he’d tear his hamstring and be out 6 weeks.
Until we get him off the list maybe there is hope.
Langford
Laverde
Begley
Perkins
Stringer
Martin
Melksham
Gresham
Guelfi
Redman
Now trying to convert:
- Hobbs
- Jones
All in between players… who then been turned into something else now. Aweful drafting strategy.
We’re talking about drafting strategy here so:
Begley - I 100% give you this one. Kind of a perfect example I think of the type you don’t want to draft in the first couple of rounds. B grade forward and B grade mid at junior level, more accomplished as a forward. Drafted more for what he might become rather than what he was.
Stringer - we didnt draft
Martin - we didnt draft - has never been a midfielder unless you count wing as midfield
Gresham - we didnt draft and we didnt recruit as a midfielder
Redman - pretty sure he was never a mid although happy to be corrected on that, from memory he came through junior level as a forward.
Melksham - Too long ago for my memory of him to be clear but I think he was mostly a midfielder at junior level, surged up draft boards after winning the TAC cup and having a big grand final performance. I dunno, weird one to include on this list I think.
Langford - kind of fits I guess? From memory he didn’t really play midfield as a junior but we did try and turn him into one, which is probably more of a development failure than a drafting one given he seems to be a natural forward.
Guelfi was a super late pick so if you can get anything out of them you count yourself lucky.
The draft strategy has to take the state of the current list into consideration especially towards to later rounds.
During the Dudoro era, we haven’t drafted well when it comes to pure small forwards. Full stop.
The point being missed is the call to stop drafting part time forwards and expecting them to turn into stars.
People still keen to keep Dees F1?..
Remarkably, Melbourne will play only one double-up game against a top-eight side from 2024 which is Hawthorn.
There is not one double-up game against a top-four team.
Otherwise, the Demons have a run that is softer than a duck down pillow with repeat contests against North Melbourne, West Coast, Gold Coast, St Kilda, Collingwood and Hawthorn.
yep
They finish below us and get THAT draw?
That’s how it works, the lower the finish the “easier” the draw.
Or at least how it’s meant to.
Even North double up against Sydney and Carlton
I’m with you that we haven’t drafted small forwards. I just don’t agree that we’ve been drafting part time forwards, apart from Archie. We just haven’t been drafting forwards in general, small or tall, at least at the top end of the draft anyway we’ve taken some late fliers here and there. Which is remarkable really when you consider our forward line has been our glaring weakness for years now, at least since Daniher and Orazio left.
As Vozzo mentioned, we have a list strategy now, which suggests that under Dodoro we didn’t have one. Remarkable.
It’s all pretty much irrelevant last year people would have said playing the hawks twice was a massive advantage
Didn’t Jonty have a good second half of the season?
You mean Jonty? He had his moments, a couple of bags. To my eyes never looked to be moving with the same freedom that he did last year.
Laverde would run a bit in the mid and kick POINTS until he’d tear his hamstring and be out 6 weeks.
GC, Collingwood and Hawthorn aren’t easybeats. North will improve and I can feasibly see them winning games against a flaky team like Melbourne.
STK and WCE I have no idea how to judge.
But yes, I’d still like to keep their pick.
Yeah, realised that after I posted.
If we can use the F1 to pick up a Faull, Gerreyn or Hannaford, I’d do it.
Melbourne got looked after heavily on that 2025 fixture. Trade the pick and get back into that draft!
nah
If they go 2 and 4 after six rounds the heat will come for them in the media and it could all come crashing down.
But either way it’s going to be a top 10 pick
