I would have thought Melbourne at 9 is the least likely place in the draft for a bid on Kako.

It’s not purely about volume of picks in any one year. It also has to be about targeting the top end of the draft similar to what Carlton and Melbourne have done by trading future picks into quality drafts like this year.
Richmond is an outlier as they just happened to strike gold with so many wanted players either out of contract or targeted by former coaches now at ■■■■ teams with quality picks. Good luck replicating that with our list.
Why does it have to be about that? I’m not saying you’re wrong, it could be a good strategy I guess. Has there been evidence in the past of a team doing this and having it pay off big time?
I think Jayden Nguyen may surprise and be a good pick up for us later in the draft/CAT B.

Me too - I thought the most likely is the Saints using the Battle compo pick before them.

Lions are open to trade for more points.
We could trade 40 and 46 for their 27.
Therefore we match Kako bid (if around 12) with 27 and 28, which leave us with 31 to use and 53 +54

From memory the Lions traded two later picks for pick 27 during trade week. I’m not completely across their list but they must have done that for a reason… possibly list spot limitations.
I looked it up, they traded picks 32 and 45 for 27 - so it would be a bit weird for them to turn around and then trade pick 27 to us for 40 and 46.

Cal has confirm we will trade out one or both of 28 and 31 for other picks, probably into the future.
He also expects Prior to be a Don in 2025

It’s weird how the same articles can suggest clubs won’t pick Ashcroft higher to force Brisbane to pay up for their FS, but also suggest clubs will pick Kako higher to force us to pay up
