We were wisely spooked into it!
How does that work?
So 28 and 31 will be swallowed up by the Kako bid.
So do we:
a) use a F1 and pick 28 or 31 to get into teens this year?
b) trade 28 and 31 for later pick and more points?
c) something esle?
Draper sliding past the crows to 8 would surprise me
We don’t need more points. I did the math a while ago and while it gets tricky due to picks sliding around… if we traded out of both 28 and 31 our four late picks are enough points to match a bid from ~pick 8 onwards.
So if we trade 28/31 into the future (before Kako bid), after the Kako bid we can aim to move back in this draft using a combo of picks (provides more flexibility)
Dees F1 and a F2 could be enough to get a low teens pick?
Sorry I meant picks and points.
So instead of 28 and 31 getting wiped out we get a bunch of later picks, some we get to keep.
I’m not a guru on this but I’m sure there’s a reason why the teams like Brisbane that have to do this regularly tend to prefer to match with those picks in the mid 40s to mid 50s. It must be the sweet spot for maximum value.
So the fact that we traded into a bevvy of picks in that range, enough that it provides us with almost the perfect points total we need to match a bid around where Kako might go… feels too much like coincidence to me. I’m pretty sure this is the way that Rosa and co have planned it.
We line up trades ready to trigger when the bid comes. Trade out 28 and 31 for future picks, match using 40, 46, 53, 54, then trade back in if we can find deals that don’t cost too much.
To my eye in terms of the way he moves, and his ball control in tight and his explosiveness around stoppage, Draper looks the best player in this draft. Maybe not ‘body of work’ perhaps but just as you compare guys and look for their attributes he looks super impressive and has superstar potential IMO.
I’m happy with us being opportunistic and trading back into the first round if we see someone we like, either after a Kako bid is matched, or before if we are able to get a look at a pick inside the top 10 and the 2025 Dees pick we have at hand is attractive enough for another club looking to bolster their future pick suite.
Based on exposed form he should be Pick 1. Make the Lions pay up Richmond.
Perhaps they may trade for more points once the Ashcroft bid happens as the picks will be eaten up. I don’t think they have enough points to match Marshall and Ashcroft yet?
Presumably we would wait until an actual Kako bid came before making the trade? You would obviously want it all lined up in advance, but wouldn’t pull the trigger until you absolutely have to?
Reading the abc news on the draft this morning.
Now i love Andy McGrath dont get me wrong.
But when you look at this list…he was the wrong pick
He was (McCluggage is the better player) but it was also just a pretty ordinary draft at the top end. Which seems kind of standard as far as our luck goes.
@noobermensch - what are the knocks on Murphy Reid that sees him sliding in a lot of phantom drafts? I only know what I’ve seen in the highlights, but he looks something special.
First trade of the period which happened straight away was brisbane shipping pick 20 to Richmond for a bunch of thirds.
Now Brisbane had the benefit of knowing Ashcroft was theres to match a bid on and we didnt on Kako all year.
Still we got a decent deal in that we got a future first plus and later round picks for our first rounder(albeit its pick 9).
We could push up from 28 and 31 for a team willing to slide back if it gets to their pick and kako hasnt received a bid.
Id say we would start trying to do that after pick 11 on if theres a guy who fits a specific need on the board.
Reason being I assume Richmond will pick for need early on. (And they would want a small forward to go with the mids, key possie players they will pick up). So from them a bid at 18 looks likely imho.
They could use 11. If they do well thats us probably trading out rather than up you would imagine to juggle the picks(28 and 31) to someone who sees value in them.
A combination of size and athleticism which raises questions over where he’ll end up playing at AFL level. There’s a bias against picking flankers super high, teams tend to want to draft core midfielders or more powerful/dominant forwards with those top 10 picks.
Only 180cm tall, which isn’t tiny there are smaller mids in the league, but he’s also not quick. If you’re short and not speedy it makes it tough to play as a core onballer, just for defensive reasons if nothing else. He’s not shown a great application to the defensive side which exacerbates that. I went over his game log again this week and most of his games he had very low tackle numbers.
I’d just be happy with a simple draft for us.
Take kako when a bid comes take two or three players in the forties, take Nguyen when a bid comes then add Prior as a DFA and preserve next years draft hand to load up for a big draft and trade period next year
I would prefer to do the dance with 28/31 and trade them into the 2nd round of next year, then preferably at least one back into this draft, and maybe keep one for next year.
Has Nguyen been officially nominated by us, I know herald sun has said that but I take everything they say with a grain of salt
