It would be an interesting analysis to see how successful players were based off their finals performances at under 18 level. Steele Side bottom made a pretty good career after his 10 goal haul!
Someone did this not that long ago. I cant remember if it was here or on big footy. Went through all the TAC Cup/NAB League/Talent League grand final MVP’s and how their careers went.
From memory it was a bit of a mixed bag.
Anyone hear that Dodoro is going to do special comments on the telecast tonight ?
Legit?
This guy.
So any chance we get to pick someone other than Kako in the first or second rounds??
So if Kako doesn’t get bid before what was our original first pick have we stuffed up royally in this draft?
Got the feeling we’re going to be pretty dissatisfied.
To be fair, he’d offer a fk load more than Brad Johnson and Ben Dixon have in recent years.
No?
The very fact we don’t have the pick means he is likely to be bid on lower. If we still had it, clubs would bid to take advantage of that
If Brisbane had pick 2, Ashcroft would go at 1 because not doing that would mean they essentially get a second first round pick for free*
Cal mentioned on Gettable yesterday that if we’d hung on to pick 9 clubs would have been incentivized to bid early to absorb it. We were always going to have to trade it.
Sorry mate, couldn’t help myself…then again, nothing would surprise me.
Fair enough.
So is the expectation for us to trade our picks in the 30s when he gets called or let them get absorbed?
He can tell us which HBFers will become elite mids.
I think if he goes at 7 (saints) we will probably live trade both for futures and use later picks to match, then try and get back in
If he goes later we might just lose 28 and then keep 31 for a pick, maybe try and move up a bit if there’s someone we want
Until you see the complete outcome - which includes whatever happens / who we take with Melbourne’s future first next year, - it is impossible to evaluate. Three or four years from now , maybe.
And I think a lot of people questioning the decision forget (like a draft expert on SEN last night) is that we need a good small forward so, so badly. More than a good mid. Locking Kako in was necessary
That’s fine. But it does push a rebuild out a year though.
I’m starting to panic.
But a rebuild takes more than one year, and we get an extra pick next year so really it doesn’t make a difference.
I’m not sure we can say moving a single first round pick by one year adds to a timeline when many players and picks are required for a rebuild.
If anything, it enhances our rebuild by getting us an extra first round pick across a two year window.
If we believe the people that should know, the only way we were going to be able to take a first round pick this season would have been to trade pick 9 far enough up the order that bidding on Kako before it became unreasonable, and we don’t know how much of a premium that would have cost us - we still needed to obtain enough late picks to match Kako.
I think people need to be realistic about this - taking an extra first rounder this year was probably not possible. The path Rosa chose achieved three things. It allowed us to keep the first rounder, it got us the points for Kako, and it brought in enough resources to trade back in and take additional picks in the middle rounds of this draft.
