The early season draft bolter has arrived out of W.A.
Our good friend @noobermensch - sharp as they are - has already posted a video on their YouTube channel of the player in question: Luke Urquhart.
There was a little bit of chatter in the last fortnight but with some footage and increased discussion, there are now some viewing him as the best prospect out of the west this season.
He’s a 190cm mid/fwd with an explosive and powerful game style. An attacking player that likes to move the game forwards, his opening two colts games have also demonstrated a real willingness to tackle and tackle hard. He’s also a threat overhead and has kicked goals in both games.
Will apparently be playing in the schools system rather that the WAFL for most of the year, so we will probably need to wait for the national championships to get a real feel for his draft range.
Here’s the video you were mentioning. Feel free to link them here if you like… I sometimes need to take a few days break from posting on blitz, especially after an ugly loss.
That’s more realistic. I thought he would get more time in the midfield for Calder this season and see his stocks go up, but so far he’s still playing the same running HBF role and about the same level as last season.
Either way, I reckon Kako is exactly the type of pressure forward with class and goal sense that we desperately need. So I hope that we’re looking seriously at him with one of our earlier picks.
An exciting and speedy small forward with a good vertical, Champion formed a strong partnership with recent St Kilda draftee Lance Collard for Subiaco in 2023. The West Coast NGA product has a good goal sense in the forward half, while he has shown an ability to work up the ground at times throughout the year.
Similar range to my mind at this stage although I have Kako ahead, champs will sort them out more. Malakai plays a bit further up the ground (wing/forward rather than traditional forward pocket) finds more of the footy, tends to be more of a playmaker than goal kicker although he does kick goals as well.
Kako is much chunkier and more powerful. Better overhead. More consistent and impactful with his pressure acts.
Almost sounds like Alwyn (hff/wing/mid) and Jayden Davey (pocket).
With small forwards are these guys able to impact at AFL level without a huge tank? i.e could Kako walk into the round 1 2025 side, like Alwyn Davey did last year?
we really need someone more of Kako’s type adding pressure and kicking goals inside 50.
