With us needing to uncover a genuine small forward, is there any chance Waylon Davey-Motlop is a rookie shot, or will he need to put in the hard yards to prove he can live an AFL lifestyle before a club will take a punt?

I havent seen Waylon play yet, so I’ll dip out of this one.

edit: he’s been playing for the Chargers so I guess I have seen him play, but havent focused on him enough to have an opinion.

He is the perfect use of a rookie spot, has a long way to go conditioning wise but he has oodles of natural talent

With Draper, Smillie and Moraes looking to be gone before our pick, I am really warming to the idea of Taj Hotton with our 1st pick. He looks as natural a HFF as you can get.

Appears to have good speed/endurance, good aerial game, neat skills and a good mix of offensive nous and defensive intent.

Only question mark is body size, but with Butters, Rozee and Gulden killing it with a similar range of abilities I’m less concerned.

We really need to find another 1st rounder to pick up Kako who is really showing himself to be the ideal small forwards for us

Who are the darftable small forwards we should be watching throughout the year?

The two standout small forwards so far that are actually playing as small forwards are Isaac Kako (essendon NGA) and Joe Berry. You can also include Malakai Champion here.

There are a few that play high half forward more than your classic small forward role. Those guys generally also play a lot of midfield at this level but probably project as forwards at the next level. Guys like Taj Hotton, Murphy Reid.

Then there are the forward/mids that are bigger, more medium sized like Zak Johnson, Harvey Langford and Archer Day-Wicks.

Its not always super easy to say who will end up as a small forward at AFL level.

If you want to follow one kid in particular then the obvious choice would be Isaac Kako. He seems almost certain to be a small forward, perfect skill set and size for it.

Thanks for that. Certainly interested in the forward pocket type small forward, so Kako sounds like the one.

Seems like a little bit slim picking at this point.

Maybe. There are some that dont like picking small forwards high up in the draft as the best small forwards often emerge from late picks or rookie spots. Eddie Betts, Tom Papley etc.

Those two would do. Let’s make that happen.

Is Kako our fella that is in danger of being picked before 40?

Yes, he is.

Taj Hotton, is our man

The update is Dillon said they haven’t decided if changes will come in this year or next, it will depend when the review is completed. So that’s different to what we heard people reporting previously, that it wouldn’t come in till 2025.

The other one they are looking at is rewarding clubs that have a player in their academy for longer. For example, if you enter kako to your academy at 12 years old and he becomes pick 1, you get access. If you sign him as a 17 year old, you can’t get access to him till after pick 50. Something like that is being floated at the moment by the clubs to the afl review team.

On the other points, I’ve seen a bit of waylon davey, he is really skillful and aggressive, but is very overweight. He could be another dean rioli type. He stands out in a class above in the games I’ve seen of him in indigenous sides.

On kako, i may have sneakily mentioned to him he needs to pull back a bit to ensure he gets to Essendon just last week. I couldn’t help myself .
