Oh of course, helps when you’ve got an unfair academy advantage by default and never need to worry about not being able to match
By best available I meant whoever fills a need with the rest of the picks. I agree that defenders are a definite need too…just not as important as forwards.
Maybe there are other challenging.
You are one expert in the space. There are 2 -3 others in media that do rankings and have these two ahead.
But without watching every u18 game, we punters are just basing our wishes on highlights and opinions of others.
End of the day, they are just opinions.
Yep. 2015 talls went Weitering, Schache, Francis, Weideman, McKay and Curnow. Hit, miss, miss, miss, hit and hit. Best two went first and last.
For what gain lol
This proves my point. If our first selection is the best forward (or KPP like Weitering was) then it’s likely they’ll be a very good player.
That 2015 draft went Weitering, Schache, Francis. That’s 3 key positions players in the first three picks and the quality fell away fast.
Seems like we might be able to wrangle a laterish pick and still pick up a decent Full forward prospect !
Played for Allies. Kicked 3 against Vic country.
I blame him about 90% but list management shouldve known about that delisted free agent rule that we were blind sided by
What are you talking about?
because massimo was a mid season pick, could just be picked up by another club like a DFA.
I thought that rule only applied if the rookie wasn’t offered a SENIOR spot? So, I don’t think that would have applied to Massimo.
I completely agree, they’re all just opinions. Some are more informed than others, but there are no certainties in drafting.
I just hope everyone keeps that front and center of mind when the kid they’ve decided the club absolutely must draft otherwise they’re a pack of morons doesn’t get picked by us.
Still doesn’t mean they a even close to the best player in the draft.
Not singling out any particular posters in here but there’s a certain naivety about those suggesting if we draft player X ‘that will fix our forward line issues’, like throwing players at a problem area will just miraculously fix it.
There will be some excellent players available at 8-10 (or wherever our pick ends up). We are simply not in a position to be reaching for need at this stage. We need more talent on every single line.
There’s only one young ‘star’ on our list that Brad believes in and that’s Jye Menzie. I doubt Mass would’ve gone anywhere near a wing this year and probably would’ve been used exclusively as a sub had he stayed. He made the right choice. Got away from a crap club and a coach with no vision.
Need and best available aren’t necessarily opposite ends of the spectrum. I think most would agree we need better talent up forward, and better talent down back - if our first could try and address either hole then that’s better than drafting the ‘best available’ who might be yet another midfielder stuck in a long line of mids who’ll be lucky to play in the 1s
Eg, Dees took Windsor at 7 last year when he was rated mid-late teens for most of the year, because he fit a need. Curtin was being talked about as a #1 pick at some stages but didn’t go till 8 because the clubs above that had different list priorities. I don’t think it really matters if we draft, say a KPF, at 10-12 when he was rated to go at 15-20, if that’s what the list really does need.
I think most clubs draft on needs despite what they say about ‘picking the best available’. That need is just usually within 5 to 10 picks of their actual spot though, not over 10 spots away like a shanahan could be (or could have been a few weeks back).
After watching some highlights im keen on Tobie Travaglia. I was leaning towards a tall KPF, but that tall strong half back is something we really need. He has a great kick aswell, 187cm. Dont ■■■■ this up
