The 2024 Draft [no longer spec] Thread

Yeah but Development……… oh, I mean Brad Scott.

Keep getting my excuses confused.

his vfl form probably gets him 10-15 spots above previous projections

I guess your example ratifies what I’m trying to say. Melbourne were 2 years removed from a flag and had just finished the year 4th, indicating their list was much further along and could afford to be a lot more targeted with their drafting. I don’t think we’re at that stage yet. We need talent first and foremost.

i think its more qbout setting up a forwardline in the timelime of 10 years from now, get a full forward that could play together for 10 years, some pacey smalls, turf these slow plodding medium forwards. and then just wait to see if it works.

I tend to agree, but if the choice for talent is between another mid who’ll be automatically behind the 6 others we have, or a HBF/KPF type that we are severely lacking elite talent with, I know which I’d rather

Yeah, I like him too. Bonus is that he has an attitude also.

Yep.

And when you overlay that our coach is very inflexible at selection and will wait until a position becomes “available” before debuting a younger player, I’d prefer us focus on an area we are lighter on so we can start getting games into them straight away.

Never said they were the best player in the draft. We can’t get the best player in the draft (unless somehow we’re extremely lucky)…but we do have the opportunity to get the best forward or defender in the draft.

The other consideration for Shanahan is whether we want two shortish KPFs who both play a style not too dissimilar

I’m waiting on the official measurements at the combine. I feel like Shanahan has grown a little, and I saw 196cm listed somewhere at one point rather than 194.

Didn’t Shanahan lead contested marks at the carnival? or was it the Coates League?
If that is the case I don’t think he should be Mcgrathholed as just a lead up key forward.

I was referring to Armstrong specifically (which wasn’t clear on reflection).

I fully admit I haven’t watched a lot of the player videos but I wasn’t overly impressed with Armstrongs highlight reel. Having watched the three VFL games I would be pretty stoked if we got Shanahan to partner Caddy and Kako

The whole “short key forward at 194” is a bit misleading. Players like Caddy and Curnow are extremely athletic and can jump over/around the opposition. Just because a bloke is 205cm doesn’t mean they’re better in the contest. I’d rather have a mobile, athletic key forward who is better at ground level than a giant like 2MP who is extremely limited.

Think we need speed and quality ball users over another forward at our first pick. I’d be pretty disappointed if we took Jobe at pick 8/9

Curnow, Hogan, Cameron top 3 in the Coleman all around 1.94 - 1.96 cm

Lalor looks like a potential gun - but really, I have no idea.

I just did his most recent game from the weekend. I just can’t see him lasting to our pick unfortunately. He keeps on getting better each week it feels like.

Thanks for that.
