The Beer Thread

Unfortunately living in China l have very little to add to this thread, as most beers here are akin to sex in a canoe.

Perhaps there is a niche for you to start importing? I hear wine has started becoming popular in the PRC.

^^ love the Beechworth pale ale.

Iā€™ve prolly recommended this b4ā€¦but I like these. Note the flavour profile indicator, which is probably handy if youā€™re drinking with someone who has nfi

Iā€™ve been boiling my hops in water - should I be boiling it with some liquid malt extract instead?

Apparently (internet forum anecdotals) boiling in wort ā€œimproves the tasteā€ of both bittering hops (~60 minute boil) and flavouring hops (15-20 minute boil)?

But does boiling LME detract from the flavour of the LME?

And does anyone know of scientific reasons why?

I trust blitz x1000 more than home brew forums.

Cold months I tend to gravitate towards dark ales and stouts. I know most have heard of it by now but in case you haven't do yourself a favor and pick up one of these from Dan Murphy's this weekend. Smokey, rich, liquid velvet. Not your chugging type of beer.

Have you tried Holgateā€™s Temptress?

Bombers Beer should be a stout (black) that looks like an amber ale or a cherry lambic (red). High in ABV, big on rich flavour, like our strong rich club history.

Also flat.

Thick, treacle-like.

Have to be a ā€œBombers Bitterā€ right now.

Leaves a horrid aftertaste.

If they would like to make a Bombers branded craft beer though I'd happily consult (free of charge) on recipe design :)
Zebba said this this morning in the ASAGA thread, now I can't stop thinking about Bombers branded craft beer. If we had a Bombers beer, what kind of beer should it be?

I think it would need to represent the red and black. Stone Brew Co. out of California made ā€œMaster of Disguiseā€ which is a stout that looks like a blonde ale. It messes with your senses. What do you think Bombers Beer should be?

An overpowering vanilla flavour.

Haha, things are heating up here in Japan and I was just thinking today that I canā€™t enjoy a good stout for the next few months. Brewdogā€™s Punk IPA has been showing up in cans everywhere here, and itā€™s going down a treat.

Went to the new White Rabbit Brewery in Geelong last month. It has shifted from Healesville to be co-located with Little Creatures at the old textile mill down near the Barwon river. Theyā€™ve changed their set-up from the old Healesville brewery which was a lot like the Little Creatures canteen (pizzas, etc). They now do cured meats and cheese platter stuff, but the beer is pretty good. They have all their regular stuff like the white ale on tap but they also have a few seasonal beers that they make there that donā€™t get bottled. I enjoyed the Tiddywidder which apparently is a Berlin Wiesse (spelling?), and the Red ale which they said they were looking to start bottling. Worth checking out for a cruisy afternoon.

More like it spontaneously starts re-fermenting again sometime after 4 weeks in the bottle for some mysterious reason. You then need a crystal ball to know when to put each bottle (player) in the fridge to get the best out of them.

About to try this one. Bought a mixed sample box with Pale, Golden , red, Porter etc. This one is a ā€œlimited releaseā€ of unmalted wheat, pilsner malt and Raspberry and Rhubarb jam! Crikey!

Annnnnndā€¦it wasnt great. Almost like a carbonated zing to it from the jam flavours. Less body and lighter drinking than a White Rabbit White, for example, but an upfront tang that didnt really grab me. Ok, drinkable but not a must-get-more scenario, not by a long shot.

Their more traditional beers will be interesting.

It gets horrible ratings on ratebeer.com.

I look forward to getting back next month and trying some of the local fare. Hopefully I can try some more Feral, some La Sirene, or Modus Operandi.

Just getting on the James Squire rangeā€¦

Downed a James Squire: Sun Down. Lovely drop

Cricketers Arms have a pretty solid IPA out. Good summer quaffing.

Four Pines Pale Ale is probably my favourite beer right now.

Very solid.

Worth a try
