Multiple reasons

We still would have hopes of developing a quality kpf from within, we still need options if decide not to play 2 rucks by choice or based on opposition/ conditions etc, we still need options if injuries occurred, if 2MP was out again Jones would likely be first picked next presently but IMO Hunter could bypass him over preseason

We also have been trying to prise a gun kpf off other clubs ongoing, Larkey most recently this year. Ben King is OOC end of next year, so is JUH. Can guarantee we will be into them and aligning with Jones being OOC himself.

We won’t have to be concerned about finals for some time to come.
That is just a pipe dream atm.

I think Brad’s coaching role is a bit like when Paul Roos was coaching Melbourne.
Time will tell.

OK. I’ll give this a shot. This is a round 1 side I would like to see. Probably not round 23…24…whatever the hell it is now.

B: McGrath, McKay, Baldwin
NH: Hind, Ridley, Redman
C: Martin, Hobbs, Shiel
HF: Perkins, Jones, Menzie
F: Langford, Wright, Gresham
Follow: Goldstein, Parish, Merrett
Int: Brian, Setterfield, Caldwell, Durham, Tsatas

Lot of tossing up with this side, so a few notes:

Draper and Stringer I don’t think will be fit enough at the start of the season to make round 1. Won’t be in full training before new year, and others will be ahead of them. Fit Goldstein is better than an underdone Draper. (heh maybe even normal Draper). Brian to give him a break off bench.

Laverde, Kelly, Baldwin probably fighting for the 1 spot. Would like to see Baldwin, but who knows. Given his size, if he comes on, might even be a CHB.

Hind off HB, just for his run and carry. Could easily come out though. McKay, McGrath, Ridley, Redman the locks only in the back line.

Happy with centre line, with maybe Shiel and Durham swapping in and out.

I reckon a fit Jones, (looks good pre season) ahead of Weid, Hunter. Menzies, and Perkins flanking him. Menzie looks a physical speciman pre season, a good work ethic, and I really hope he tears it up next year.

Langford is a lock with Wright, and I have Grasham at Wright’s feet crumbing, with Langford the other leading option.

Starting with Parish, Merrett in the middle, switching with Caldwell and Tsatas, and Setterfield giving Hobbs a break as the inside bulls.

Note I don’t have Heppell, Cox, Weid, Kelly, Laverde, Guelfi, Duursma in the mix as yet. Might well change as pre season gets going (injuries as well). Duursma could well be on Shiel’s wing, but wanna see how he goes pre season.

Heppell I would like to see mentoring the VFL side, and giving it a kick along. Just can’t see him in best 22 any more.

P.S. A fair warning to Jones, Weid, Hunter. Work you ■■■■■ off because give a young Caddy a year to bulk up and refine his craft in the VFL, and he will be after all your jobs. Don’t forget either we have a virtual new recruit in Reid. What a boon if he shows form as well.

It’s going to be absolutely fascinating to see the round 1 side. There’s no obvious best 22, with valid arguments for 2-3 players to miss out on any part of the ground.

This is how I have our best 22:

B: Redman McKay McGrath
HB: Ridley Laverde Hind
C: Duursma Setterfield Martin
HF: Durham Wright Perkins
F: Stringer Langford Gresham
R: Draper Merrett Parish
I/C: Goldstein Hobbs Caldwell Shiel

Criticisms of this side are that it appears one midfielder too heavy/one defender too short. I also feel like we lack in creative small forwards with the ability to keep the ball from leaving our F50.

I would like to see Cox put pressure on Hind and for Tsatas to place pressure on Setterfield. Reid to come in at the expense of Laverde once he is ready.

The problem with these best 22 sides is…most don’t have Heppell/Kelly and sadly Brad Scott will almost certainly play at least one of them.

The trouble with the last couple of Best 22 forward lines if is Wright continues to drop nearly every mark like this year, added to a mix of Perkins, Langford, Jones, Stringer, then the ball will exit quicker than a bad vindaloo curry.

Yeah. It’s not as if Wright had any excuse the past season for not performing to 2022 levels. Just had a minor shoulder knock. Nothing that could have possibly affected his performance.

Those guys are expected to perform

Top 5 most important to improve us up the ladder
Draper 2nd ruck/first ruck/fowd
Setterfield bigger mid
Tsatas - speedy mid
Reid - can he finally deliver on talent, get on the park and perform.
Martin - Nic can still go to another level.

It will make a huge difference if Cox can go big in 2024.

This side has Heppell & Guelfi, but no Setterfield.

WTF?..

Reckon we will need 3 small / medium defenders in round 1 vs Hawks. As they have breast, ginnivan, watson
