What's the knock on Skipworth?

2009:
Skipworth doesn’t read newspapers, he says, so it was via word of mouth that he learned of the mounting speculation launched after his first senior game with Essendon in round-one — started in a rival newspaper — that his fellow players resented his promotion to the senior team.

“To be honest it really did cut me up,” Skipworth told The Sunday Age. “To get that said about you is the worst thing that can be said about a footballer; that my teammates didn’t want me in the team.”

Wow. Never heard that before. He did alright in the senior team too. Why did they resent his promotion?

Answered in another thread. It was a false rumour.
I've never been oversly enamoured by Egan or Skipworth. They seem very uninspiring.

Comparing Ego and Skippy is like comparing a Ferarri with a Ford Prefect

Fixed.

For those who may not know what a Ford Prefect is:

Great car. Absolutely flat out at 60mph(100 kph). Brakes like a Malvern Star.
Did a trip to Sydney in 1965 in one. You haven’t lived ( nearly died ) until you went through the Cullerin Ranges on the old Hume Highway with a Semi up your bum doing 40 mph uphill and 60 mph downhill with the semi driver laughing his fool head off. Never more scared in my life.

Source was Patrick Smith reporting in the Australian in 2009. Glad he jumped off the Bombers, no interest in actual supporting a team, just in reporting negative crap.

Harding joins Bombers Essendon has appointed Rob Harding as its new Game Intelligence and Opposition Strategy Coach.

Harding joins the Bombers after working in the AFL for the last decade, most recently at Adelaide Crows.

Alongside John Worsfold and Mark Neeld, he’ll play a key role in formulating Essendon’s game day strategy and opposition analysis.

“The opportunity to work with John Worsfold was really exciting for me,” Harding said.

“This is a massive Club and I’m really excited by the prospect of being involved on ANZAC Day, there are so many members and supporters.

“The opportunity to come back to Victoria, where I’m from originally, work for a big Victorian Club is too good to pass up.”

Harding says there is a natural temptation to implement the game plan of the reigning premier.

But the key is taking part of that strategy and then adding further layers to it.

“The great challenge for every club is to not try and copy what has just been successful but to try and get ahead of the game and move to the next level,” Harding said.

“We’ll look at what the Bulldogs did really well, what Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong do really well and we might take bits of that.

“But we’ll also look at how we can beat that and go to the next stage.

“The Bulldogs with their ability to run and carry is outstanding, Hawthorn is still a great side, Geelong – the way they move the ball and the way they defend – so there is a lot to look at.

“I think the game is going to go in a couple of different directions – it’s going to be interesting to see which way it goes.

“Looking through the team, there are so many guys that played a large number of games last year and there will be great competition for spots with the guys returning as well.

“It’s a great time for the footy club and I’m really excited to be involved with it.”

Woosha leveraging the Crows connection. Imagine if he brought back Campo!

Never heard of him.

This is significant.
West Coast in 2016 was one team to list the Opposition strategist/ Analyst as within the coaching panel ( John Wardrop (head of analysis and opposition strategy)). Gold Coast was another ( Brett Munro (opposition coach) ) Thats not to say that other clubs did not have opposition strategists functionally reporting to the Head coach.

Now, Harding has been brought on board our coaching panel, placing the opposition analyst within the Football performance under the Head Coach.
In 2016, the 2 performance analysts and the performance psychologist were within the football dept under Rob Kerr.
Functionally, Football Performance is where Performance Analysis belongs, but perhaps the placing of these staff under the Football Dept is just to even out the numbers reporting to each of the Senior managers .

This move has the coaching fingerprints of Woosha and Guy McKenna all over it. I am not saying thats a bad thing at all.

It seems to be elevating the importance of tactical issues, matchups and tagging strategies.

At every game I hear many who would consider themselves “Game intelligence and opposition strategy” material. You just know by the one phrase uttered in booming voices “belt the little farker and then just kick the friggen thing!”

LOL They say footy is a simple game. In this case “belt the little farker and then just kick the friggen thing!” is a simple opposition strategy and it makes for pretty good entertainment

We need to start using our club profile to build a strong broad and intensive coaching panel with specialists. This is a good signing. Now if we can just announce a goal kicking coach…

Never heard of him.

He is a gun. At one stage he was the youngest person doing the job in the industry. He has been approached by a lot of clubs. Helped Geelong win there last flag.

I’m liking this less and less.

Please don’t say he was also at the Gold Coast Suns.

Wait, surely we don’t have an org chart clearly delineating responsibilities and accountabilities?

LOL.

OK, in case you are not making a joke, you can see it here but you need to use the titles to construct the hierarchical org chart. But if you wanted to see the functional matrix chart, thats not so easy . You have to read between the lines, and the day to day matrix interactions will be a bit fluid. You would need to be a fly on the wall to figure out how the matrix works and as soon as you think you figured it out, it probably has evolved.

The matrix especially comes in when considering the working relationship between a number of Football dept and Football Performance dept positions especially in the medical, psychological and performance analysis areas.

I’m more than happy for that to be the game plan the next time we play west coast.

Why do you need a strategist to tell a team to kick it to Joedan in the square with Tippa, Colyer, Razio crumming.
