The Cricket Thread (part 6) - from July 2023 (Bartholemew Frinton-Smythe, Humphrey Wigbert-Porter, and Quinten Breckenridge)

That’s the genteel reaction of the gentry in the Home Counties. It could get more physical at the next venue.

Thread title updated to acknowledge our Lords and masters: Bartholemew Frinton-Smythe, Humphrey Wigbert-Porter, and Quinten Breckenridge.

Just so everyone’s clear on those names - and I dearly love them - they are made up. Just as funny that they are believable

So the general consensus is that if an opponent behaves in a shitful manner it’s ok for you to do it too. Jeepers creepers, the Bairstow dismissal was low and grubby. I hope you folks don’t teach your kids to play sport like that.

For me the spirit of cricket is more about how the game is played between the teams. Not anything to do with the cricket game itself, we have rules for that. I mean, respect your opposition, shake the opponents hands after the game despite what may have transpired. Demonstrating concern if your opposition get injured eg. Its a gentleman’s game, in that while you play aggressive cricket, you still respect your opponent.

Although sides don’t scheme to continuously attempt mankad’s or stumpings of fast bowlers for example, thank goodness as it would be a monotonous game if people tried it all the time, these are legitimate modes of dismissals and batsman should be smarter, respect their wicket and not give a chance for these dismissals to occur.

But the jostling of players in the members? Really? By virtue of the antiquity of the Long Room, and the assumption that people-like-us know how to behave, Lord’s retains the privilege of unusual proximity to the players — the frisson from hearing a player’s spikes on the hardwood floor is one of cricket’s glories.

They will not have it long, however, if blimps and prigs want to vent fury on their visitors because they are unaware of the Laws that . . . checks notes . . . their own club sets for the world. And what could be a worse look in the week of the Equity in Cricket report than puce-faced, dim-bulb snobs picking fights with a placid, softly spoken Muslim player? Chaps, pull yourselves together. You’re actually cheating Stokes of some of his glory.

Imo bairstow wasn’t trying to gain any advantage, he was just walking down to talk to stokes- like all batsmen do

For mine, it’s the same as a mankad- but a mankad is punishing a batsmen for trying to gain an advantage

Agree with your comments. From the footage shown, it was very obvious to the Aussies that Bairstow was having absolutely no regard for where the ball was once it went past him. He should always be watching the ball, especially if he’s keen to wonder down the pitch for a scratch around. Relying on the “spirit of cricket” card to save you from getting out is a really poor argument.

What Carey did was to upset Bairstow’s thought bubble. Even better was that it worked to dismiss him. Super smart cricket by Carey. Sensational match awareness (just like his positioning for the Duckett catch) and really really dumb stupid cricket by Bairstow.

In what way?
Headingley despite the bad wraps is one the more knowledgeable grounds and as much as I cant stand the city they normally put on a pretty good test and welcome the opposition fans. They team will cop some heckling and shenanigans no doubt but I doubt there is much violence

Are you okay with Mankad dismissals??

What about ball-handling dismissals?

So the England head coach in his playing days ran out a player who held his bat in his ground until making eye contact with the square leg umpire, and then left to celebrate with his team-mate. That’s the Spirit of the Game that McCullum played by. He can disown it now - maybe Carey can be England head coach one day - and if so should reasonably expect to be respected as a pontificator on what the Spirit of the Game means once he’s no longer playing - like Baz now? If not, why not?

Also who was running those time Bairstow threw at the stumps, including earlier this game?

Yes. More mankads.

Batters should stop taking liberties and start staying in their ■■■■■■■ crease.
