The Cricket Thread (part 6) - from July 2023 (Bartholemew Frinton-Smythe, Humphrey Wigbert-Porter, and Quinten Breckenridge)

What’s the point of bringing marsh in then.

When under pressure I used to like going for a wander away from the crease. It’s a way of relieving pressure and resetting for the next ball. It’s all part of the game.

I think you should warn them first.

Did you do it behind or in front?

I used to do the same, but I always wandered towards square leg and stayed behind the crease, just in case. I always took the approach that all keepers were grubby ■■■■■■ that would lie and cheat as much as they could for a wicket.

Two tests in and it’s been a sensational Ashes series. So much interest in it, and no doubt it had really fired up Australia’s interest in the test side.

let’s get the job done of

  1. retain Ashes
  2. win series

actually just do 2 and 1 is done

That was going to be my other point. Bring in Mitch Marsh. A bloke who has played 1 first class game in 2 years and after 32 tests he averaged 25 with the bat and 39 with the ball.

Why should you need to warn them? Should a bowler take the rules of cricket book out with them to show the batter why they need to stay in their crease.

Wonder to square leg not down the pitch unless you know the ball is dead.

The bowlers warn the player all the time.

The local team has fought its way back to the seventh tier and would have high hopes of pushing higher. Would be a nice team to jump onboard with.

Surely it was Quinten Breckenridge III

Good philosophy and approach to the game. I saw plenty of banter between the teams that was amicable. Players went up to broad and Anderson when they were hit on the helmet to check their welfare. Warner and Anderson were chatting after the game as were others, nothing wrong with that. I have already outlined my thoughts on the dismissal, that’s dismissal, not dismay nor dismal, although that l am sure is that is how the English are seeing things right now. This controversy is over shadowing the result and Stokes magnificent batting, so it is a pity if this game becomes known as ‘stumpingate.’

I’d rather Nesser than Marsh if we were to drop Green (which they won’t). An allrounder should be outright selectable for one discipline, and adequate-to-good at the other. Marsh is kinda adequate at both, but not really up to it at either. Green is more talented, but hasn’t really nailed it down. Nesser at least is an excellent bowler with good batting prowess.

Is Lyon is out, do we really need Starc to rough up the surface?

With a quick turnaround between tests 2 and 3, maybe we could see a few more changes than usual.

Boland, Neser and Murphy IN
Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon OUT

You need Starc for his speed and variation. His wickets helped win us the test at Lords. Stokes was beaten for pace in the first innings and the ball to destroy Pope’s stumps in the second dig was a rip snorter.

I have been to many test matches in England, and while the crowds are usually good humoured, they get ugly at times, especially against there own players. I was at a Poms vs Kiwi Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham in the 1990, and Gladstone Small copped it very harshly from some the Poms in a very racist way. The rest of the crowd just laughed. Nearly every sports event the I have been in England, the crowd are worse than anything I have ever seen elsewhere, and that includes Bombers vs Richmond at Windy Hill.

I will be travelling back 3-4 times per year but living in China is over for me, 22 years is enough (i arrived on July 4th 2001). The tiger mum will keep our daughter on track, brush twice a day.
