The Cricket Thread (part 9) - from Dec 2024

Who the hell is Jamie Smith?

New Pom keeper/bat. Heā€™s quite good. Made some very good runs in quick time.

Definitely would get a game for us given our issues at the top of the order, however I canā€™t say heā€™s had a fantastic year when his average is sub-40. Heā€™s been good, and averaging 37 certainly isnā€™t ā– ā– ā– ā– , but it shouldnā€™t mean youā€™re in the top 2 performed openers in the world. It does show a dearth of quality players in that position at Test level.

As an opener. He has had a fantastic year

His biggest issue at the moment is converting 50s into hundreds

37 is absolutely not the average of someone with a ā€˜fantasticā€™ year. Sure, opening is a bit harder. Still no. He had two team-mates averaging mid 50ā€™s this year, so he hardly played on dust bowls every game.

You donā€™t get extra credit for making garden beds look nicer.

Watching highlights.

Kohli needs to miss at least a test, if not multiple, for what he did. Thatā€™s not on.

Penalty already handed out. He was fined 20% of his match fee and docked 1 demerit point

Got off lightly.

That stuff needs to be absolutely stamped out any time it happens.

Deemed a level 1 breach under the ICC code of conduct so attracts a maximum of 50% fine and 2 demerit points so he was never going to miss a game. Need 3 demerit point points to automatically miss a game

I hope Pat orders a turner for Sydney and we go with two specialist spinners.

Carey
Cummins
Lyon
Boland
Zampa (or Murphy ā€¦ but prefer Zamps).

Pat has no control or say over what pitch is produced and the SCG hasnā€™t taken decent turn for yonks. The days of the old SCG burner is well and truly gone sadly

Well, that should be fixed.

Itā€™s always been that way so not sure why people are suddenly complaining now

All skippers have a quiet word, either directly or on the QT via officials or coaches. May not eventuate in a perfect choice, but a preference is normally passed down. Always has ā€¦
If its rain affected, more in terms of atmospheric then from memory the SCG gets low and uneven.

Wouldnā€™t be shy in playing the two spinners either way.

Agree. Cricket is a non-contact sport. Any physical altercations between players should be harshly dealt with. For someone as wealthy as him, a 20% match fee fine wouldnā€™t even touch the sides. Fine him his entire match fee and a 2-Test ban. And do what they do in local cricket, the captain gets the same penalty for failing to control his player. That would serve as a significant enough deterrent for any such behaviour on the fieldā€¦

I think thatā€™ll be close to the team - hereā€™s my guess

Get ready for Marsh to retain his spot and you will all LOVE IT. Coach thinks he is great and he is up and about.

Iā€™ve personally known the last two curators at Adelaide and it doesnā€™t really happen here. The skippers have no contact with them directly and can discuss it with CA who may or may not agree to ask the curators. The curators still have the final say in Australia at least and they can often go against the wishes of CA. Overseas though the curators are usually beholden to the ruling cricket body of the country and absolutely will accomodate team needs.
The SCG has turned into what Adelaide used to be, a genuine batsmanā€™s paradise and itā€™s sad to see the decline of the pitches in the last 10 years not just in Sydney but around the country. The variation used to be great, now we basically get 5 decks doing the same

I thought the Melbourne deck was pretty good.
1200 runs
40 wickets
5 days
Result

Doesnā€™t really get much better than that.

It was and Iā€™m not arguing that, Iā€™m just saying that the decks are lacking in variety here now

Finished watching highlights.

Pat Cummins is some cricketer, huh?
