The Essendon case to apply for a Priority Pick

There’s also the very real prospect of TAS targeting the small number of promising young players we have such as caddy or kako etc.

If Essendon can’t make significant progress in the next 1-3 years we are very likely to lose players and if that happens we’ll effectively be stuck in an almost never ending loop.

Be great to hear from the property mogul about his actual vision and strategy for the next 5 years…

Yep, back to back 11 win seasons and still managed 6 wins last year.

North and West Coast won 11 games across 4 years or something stupid.

I would 100% ask though but I’m not expecting a positive reply.

Perhaps they can somehow “generate” a first rounder to Fark Merrett off this year

The AFL shafted us on the Draper compo last year. They clearly have zero concern for our success at this point.

We farked up the Draper compo.

The AFL helped us with Kako

After ■■■■■■■ us over on priority picks and the cost for Daniher

Why should we get a priority in anything ? You don’t reward incompetance.

Suck it up and sack the coach and his team, and many senior players.

Not sure about the priority picks but we stuffed the Daniher situation by forcing him to stay just like we have Merrett. Should have sent Daniher to Sydney the minute he wanted out

We won’t get it. Even if we did it’s not a panacea. Have a look at the history of priority picks, not many of them have gone on to play in a premiership and lift their club out of the doldrums.

Do you mean:

  1. Darcy Daniher. Was drafted under the changed bidding rules in 2007. However, he was a third round pick which was the existing cost of F/S picks, so clearly we weren’t ■■■■■■ over.
  2. Joe Daniher. Was drafted under the same rules as Darcy was, but in 2012. Possible the AFL ■■■■■■ us over, but I think you’d have to be pretty conspiracy-brained to think someone saw a twelve year old Joe Daniher, thought “absolutely ■■■■■■■ not, Essendon”, and changed the rules five years ahead of his draft class.
  3. Joe Daniher, free agent. We got the highest possible compensation under the free agency system. Not ■■■■■■ over.

this club doesn’t have the humility to ever ask for afl assistance

For me, it’s not really about losing lots of revenue and crowds if they don’t get assistance. It’s much simpler.

22 years without winning a final. 22 years of objective failure.

That’s too long and most objective observers would agree that’s prolonged failure as a club. Just because Essendon is strong financially to survive a prolonged downturn of these proportions doesn’t mean it should be allowed to continue.

And that’s my argument. This is a twofold argument.

  1. Essendon imo satisfies any reasonable and objective assessment of prolonged failure
  2. The upcoming drafts are compromised and in light of this, assistance is needed if a bottom team needing assistance is reasonably expected to rise up the ladder In forceable future

Why is winning a final the standard compared to so many other options? It’s Essendon’s particular failing, but why would that be the marker compared to making finals, winning flags, bottom four finishes, whatever else?

Every pick given to us is a pick taken off Tassie. The afl need Tassie to succeed more than they need us to succeed. They won’t do it

Not winning a final for 22 years talks directly to prolonged on field failure. Considering the last 22 years in total context at Essendon, I think Essendon needs assistance and it’s not in anyone’s interests to have Essendon in the bottom 6 for the next 4-5 years more.

West Coast received assistance and won a premiership only 8 years ago!! Our incompetence over the journey isn’t much different to the mistakes that club has made since that day only 8 years ago.

No re: Daniher I’m talking about the change the AFL made whereby clubs were no longer able to snag f/s players with a 3rd rounder.

West Coast is strategically important to the AFL in a way Essendon isn’t

We as members could put a figurative gun to AFL’s head.

Give us everything we want or we vote to wind up the club.

It would a relief to be honest to end it now. It wouldn’t be a bluff. I’m sure the players wouldn’t even mind if they were all disbursed to other clubs.

It would be the sweetest revenge on the AFL. Go replace the $$$ we bring to the game with your precious Tassie and Gold Coast teams, just as we hit an oil shock and global recession.

I don’t agree. It’s a pick taken from 16 other clubs more so if it’s late first plus a late second (for example)
