The Essendon case to apply for a Priority Pick

We will get end of first round because of the bidding on the two academy, father sons going 1 and 2.

End of first round has always been the compo.

What would have been good was to get first round compo for Draper or another free agent when we are ■■■■ like the eagles got with Allen.

I’d take pick 2 for our captain like they got for their ex captain. We won’t get anywhere near that for Merrett but should.

This gets trotted out a lot in here but how exactly did they screw us on the Draper compo.

We butchered it plain and simple

Because he is getting payed more than enough to trigger a early first round compensation pick, but because of being 6 months older than Allen we didnt get it.
That to me is complete and utter fuckery.

If I am wrong - which is often the case lol, I apologise.

Much as you and I loathe and detest West Coast, they are not, and have never been, a consistent
bottom of the ladder team until the last few years.

The answer is that basically nobody outside the AFL knows. The contract amounts aren’t known, the formula isn’t known, there’s lots of opinions but nobody who actually knows is saying. The AFL could have given us a first round pick and nobody would have known whether that was “fair” or not.

If flags and winning finals are the measure we are the worst club in the league post-2001 perhaps with the suns temporarily sitting along side us.

Winning flags is obviously very difficult but making meaningful incremental progress towards that goal, really isn’t.

We should ask for assistance, knowing full well we will get knocked back - but moreso because it might actually signal a change in the thinking that has kept us anchored to mediocrity for so long.

No they weren’t. And still haven’t. The ‘Big four’ was about club support size and supporter base metrics, not on field success.

And I think this is a good think for the competition overall :+1:

Look if we get a haul this draft.

Say pick 1,20(assuming only two bids in the first round) and the afl give us an extra for the f/s bid in the top 5.

That’s probably going to look like 1,20 and 21.

then we trade Merrett for a first rounder.

could be 4 picks in the first round.

best kid in the open draft and plenty of young depth to develop over the 3 Tassie drafts.

Yeh I definitely dont think its all doom and gloom,
Take those picks this year then next year bring in Justice and Bewick, maybe trade 1 or two role players in and we arent that far off.

The absolute biggest farking thing is getting the development right, and I personally think that means overhauling basically the entire coaching department.

There is zero chance we get a pick after our first pick, no one has got it before. We need to lose free Agent for decent coin so the AFL can mask it in that like they did for Melbourne with frawley and Eagles with Allen.

We should have kicked up more of a stink with the Draper combo but our club only stands up to people inside the our club and overrule them, pretend to be strong there and then but thats it. Much like on-field, we are stacked with jellyfish top to bottom.

And what self-respecting coach will want to come to us? Even as an assistant, what looks better on the resume? Essendon or one of another 16 other clubs?

Can only ask, worthwhile coz the pressure to have Essendon competitive due to TV and crowds and also they won’t wanna leave us hanging with Tassie coming in.

Dont think the AFL care about that. At least 5 others team in Vic who will draw the numbers. Sydney amd QLD have more potential as well.

The person who applies for the job for the right reasons will be the right guy.
Ive used this analogy before but im a Chicago bears fan, who are basically the Essendon of the NFL.
Could not do anything right for years and years. Complete dumpster fire of an organization.

Since their last playoff win they have hired and fired 4 head coaches, and lots of people thought no one would want the job.
In comes Ben Johnson, who openly stated that the challenge of turning around a crappy organization excited him.
Low and behold he is an absolute leader of men and we won our first playoff game under him, and just missed out on the semi final in overtime.

I believe you need to keep turning them over until you find the right person. We havnt done that yet but that doesnt mean it wont happen.

In Nfl, head coach has more of a say and certainly more than they would at Essendon

We could have pick 1 and 2 this year it won’t matter. Pick 3 will end up the best player from the draft because the 2 kids we would picked would have their potential shredded in the Essington talent blender

Yeah AFL clubs hang onto coaches for too long in general. If you’re not seeing any green shoots in 3 years it should be enough.

Yup.

The AFL are going to regret taking our supporters for granted by giving all their attention to the clubs in other states. For example there are 3 children/ young adults that no longer watch football in my household which would have been footy heads if we weren’t so ■■■■. Sometimes you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.
