This article got me thinking. The AFL building two ovals in the centre of the Valley, imagine if timings were on our side a decade ago and we could’ve investigated moving from Windy Hill to a new facility inside this redeveloped racetrack? Likely lots of land inside the track.
Obviously I don’t know the ins and outs, however in principle it’d worth knowing whether the Valley was ever considered as a potential site for the Club when we actually moved a decade ago.
The Demons considering Caulfield track. The Bombers at the Valley would’ve kept Essendon in its heartland.
The Hangar is more than just an oval.
It’s ours to use as we like. Monday to Friday and on weekends.
We’d be renting there. And they wouldn’t have the space we have for our admin nor would it have the facilities for the players, coaches and support staff (AFL, VFL, AFLW & VFLW).
I’d prefer us getting our own facilities that we have full control over (even if it is out in Tullamarine) than to share it with a function that is very different to the AFL industry.
But the proposal to build grounds inside the Cox Plate track as part of a major redevelopment is just one of many options being considered by the Moonee Valley Racing Club.
Sounds like they’re looking to the State Government to subsidise them and get them out of having to implement their approved masterplan.
They originally agreed to provide some public sporting grounds on the infield, then stepped back to “there will be grass and sometimes we won’t use it for parking”.
You can’t put anything substantial there without blocking vision of the track.
I imagine there’s a fair bit of water that needs to go under the bridge with tv rights for Moonee valley to work. There was a test case where some people lived across the road and streamed the view from their balcony for free online including during race days and it’s was deemed totally fine because it was just the view they had. There’s no way a pay TV network is going to cop AFL games being live streamed for free.
Grew up in walker street just a couple streets over from the racecourse, only moved out a few years ago, shattered is an understatement if this goes through
You could build a fantastic stadium there and get rid of racing that is already dying a slow death. Close to tram, train, freeway and no wind and no aircraft.
Developers have their greedy eyes on it for residential
