Redfin.
Plentiful (technically a pest) and delicious. I don’t think they are sold anywhere, but very easy to catch.

Yep for a fresh water species the Redfin isn’t too bad, especially if it comes out of a system with reasonable water quality.

Good call out the humble Redfin… Another saltwater species that is plentiful that I am a fan of is the gar fish. Not often found at F&Cs but you see the odd restaurant that has them. Not that I’ve eaten out recently.

See I reckon the thing most people like about whiting in relation to taste is that it hardly has any! It’s very mild. I like whiting, but I often quote the bloke from Walkerville who had many years before owned a commercial boat (maybe out of Welshpool or Port Albert?)

Anyway I asked him about his favourite fish- in the context that a lot of locals focus on whiting. His comment (which I agree with if not as strongly as he put it):
“If there’s flathead available, they can stick their whiting up their arse.”

There’s fish as good as flatties, not sure any are better. Whiting are still good, but I reckon they are better dusted in flour and fried in butter. Flatty is good any way

Previous owner was a gun, quality dropped off a bit when they left, but still good.

It has been awhile so not sure about now.

The fish burgers were brilliant though.

Eaten Spanish mackerel few times when up north. Goes all right but I do worry about ciguatera when eating it…

My favourite eating fish have plenty of flavour. Trout fresh caught from Tassie highland lakes, or the alpine lakes along the border of VIC/NSW have a really deep orange colour, and taste great. I also like wild caught Alaskan salmon. The farmed Tassie salmon is a very poor second.

I don’t hate flathead. I just prefer whiting. But the deeper sea Blue Eye Trevalla trump them both when you can get it.

Yeah. It doesn’t seem to be heaving with customers. Hopefully it’s good, just ordered.

If they’ve gone downhill under new ownership, then I’d have loved to have tried them at their peak. Very good standard! Chip portion not the biggest but high quality. Will definitely go back! I’m giving it a 9 out of 10. In hindsight a portion size that was just enough and I don’t feel like I’m in a food coma.

Tassie Rainbow trout are superb, I’m not a huge fan of the more muddy brown trout. From the estuaries, Bream is lovely.

Hands down the best eating fish is Striped Trumpeter, second would be Turbot.

Oh aren’t people so fancy with their Redfin and Blue Grenadier and other fancy fish.
Give me flake chips and a few fried dimmies and I’m set.

The brown trout from the Tassie highland lakes, not the rivers, have a deep orange colour flesh, and are almost indistinguishable from rainbow from the same lakes, and much nicer than farmed rainbow or muddy river browns. The shrimp and yabbies give them the colour and flavour.

EDIT: trout that aren’t farmed are not allowed to be sold commercially in Tasmania

lol I fished the inland lakes for years with family… still prefer the rainbows… by a long way

Always flake for me. It’s unique and something I never grew up with in my part of the world. I like it so much that I never feel compelled to try anything else.

I should probably try fish shop barramundi; I don’t mind eating fresh or frozen from the supermarket.

Sad that my go to F&C have changed owners (original retired). In the space of 3 weeks new owners have:

  • Increased prices ($10.50 for flake, $8 min chips)
  • Changed from fresh, real potato cakes to frozen premade potato cakes that use powdered potato…

I remember as a kid Dad would drive me from the Gold Coast down to PKG seafoods at Tweed Heads for a feed during the school holidays. Looking out over the Tweed River, the food was always great.
