I’ve seen it happen time and time again over the years. New owners always think they know best.
They’ll be gone within 12 months, you can put your house on it.

New owners at my nearest have put up prices for example flake = $12.
The thing is, it’s worth it. Been twice and it’s a proper thick chunky and normal length/width fillet. Would say I’ve had flake with half that amount of fish at times. Happy to pay the extra for that - we rarely go F&C anyway, as I usually am getting flatties/pinkies/squid at reasonably regular intervals. But haven’t for a long while now - been trout fishing a bit instead, and for that I only catch and release.
I remember 5c minimum chips at an F&C in Hawthorn Rd just south of Balaclava Junction and we only moved there in 1970.
Dunno if this is the thread for it, but Carl’s Jr is going bye bye.
Mixed feelings about that. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible, I had one close enough to my house to walk to, and the refills were free.
Maccas is so awful now as an overall experience that I hold on to any other option I can get.
This is probably the thread for proper Australian hamburgers from the fish n chippery
Not Carl Jnrs or McDonalds. That might be the McDav thread?
Is Carls Jr in Oz? Never seen one.
I’ve seen 1. In Armstrong Creek.
My local charge $72 for a 4 person pack:
Large chips (they dont do dollar amounts)
4 x flake
4 x Dim sims
4 x Potato cakes.
Chips are at extortionate prices.
When on earth are wages gonna keep up with hot chip prices!
Felt sorry for the poor pensioner trying to order for his wife and grandkids. He asked for $5 worth of chips, 2 flake and 2 fish bites. Owner chuckled and said they only do small, medium and large and the small was $7.00
The poor fella was gobsmacked and said that he only had $20 and the small wouldnt even feed them as a 4.
He ended up getting one flake and small chip and 2 fish bites (I remembered as my heart broke for the poor guy. 2 fishbites, 2 nuggets, 2 potato cake and small chips cost me $20).
While we waited, we just chatted and he mentioned how they havent ordered F&C for years and thought it would be a treat for them and the kids. Last time he ordered, $4 of chips would feed a family and flake was $5. His eyes watered at some of the packs and prices that they had.
Atrocious how much prices have gone up.
Its climate change or tariffs on spuds?
Seems rich that chips are at such a premium.
Fish itself hasnt gone up a lot per kilo
This ones for you stealth!
We love the Fish and Chips here in the UK both take-away and in the village pubs BUT what my wife really misses is the humble potato cake, she loves then every time we head to Aus.
Wow they don’t have them?
I thought they were called Scollops over in the UK? Something else?
i need to check at the local Chippy.
Maybe it’s leasing of the premises, wage rises, etc? Happening everywhere. I actually had homemade fish and chips a while ago. Got some fresh fish from Lamanna (their seafood is quality) and went with a crumb as opposed to batter. It turned out great, and had enough for several nights so overall was pretty cost effective…
Once dated a lovely English lass in Australia.
The thing she missed here from the fish n chips was curry sauce.
When you combine curry sauce with our chicken salt on chips……
Omfg. I think its peak chip.
They absolutely do have them.
The ones we go to they have Potato Scallops and Cakes. The potato cakes are just hash browns pretty much
The best UK fish and chip shop I’ve been to is in Bath. Was absolutely magnificent!
I only eat seafood very rarely like once or twice per year tops but the rellies always reckon that Whitby is their go to and they often head over there on weekends. I must admit the chips were pretty good.
