The MCG fence

53000 cricket fans, dawdling in across 2-3 hours, compared to the 70% of an 80k footy crowd who get there within 10 minutes either side of the bounce?? It'll be a ■■■■ fight, guaranteed.

prophetic.

what’s to stop the crowd lining up at the gates pushing the fence over and bum rushing the joint.

Well pazza, it looks like it has failed miserably today with a big crowd turning up late

Can’t blame the fence.

One. The gates were opened at 1pm as there was a T20 double header on. Some 12000 went to that match on it’s own. The only issue there was the ticket queue. But, that’s not a surprise.

Two. Traffic issues. Here’s a question - why would anyone feel the need to drive to the MCG, knowing the prospects of a big crowd and the fact there was also soccer at AAMI park at the same time, where another 10000+ went - all throughout footy season people are encouraged to take public transport to the ground - did this not happen on Saturday? If not, why not?

Three. The carpark. We know that there only a certain amount of spots are available at the MCG.

Four. The crowd itself. No-one at the MCG expected a crowd over 80000 Saturday night. They got that wrong.

To blame the fence on it’s own is to not look at all the other issues.

#STANDBYFENCE

(you had to, literally)

There’s nothing like creating congestion points to really increase the safety and enjoyment of patrons.

Jesus christ Pazza, do you have the equivilent love for fences as Gerard Twatley for Makybe Caviar or something?

The ‘illusion’ of safety is often confused with actual safety.

Prophetic would suggest it needs any thought. This was ■■■■■■■ obvious.

Hahaha

You’ll catch some with this, too.

stupid fence is stupid.

We arent thinking this through. We should build a giant wall around the city and you can only travel in by train. Then we can do the checks at train stations before you get there. We already have the PSOs in place. Of course we would have to evict everyone from the city in the first place and then only let them back in with strict security checks. We could probably introduce some sort of ID card to make this easier. That way you just have to scan the card to get into places. We could have door to door checks to make sure no one is harbouring someone without a card. The added benefit is that the card could be used to track where people were going and what they were up to.

That would teach the terrorists a real lesson. You cant take away our freedom.

“and we won’t let terrorists change our way of life!”

Yes that’s the joke.jpg

We need to also harrass underagers for i.d.

Ok. All the randoms I’ve talked to think the fence is useless. All the cops I know think the fence is useless. Does anyone actually think the fence will make the slightest difference?

The ridiculous part of all this is that the temporary fence was only manned at the entrances. The rest of the perimeter was totally unmanned - it would have been so easy for a terrorist to just pass (either under or over the fence) a bag full of explosives to an accomplice on the inside. It's actually less secure.

having worked on the other side of the fence (haha pardon the pun) can honestly say in any big event like this security is so lax and underpar that i’m surprised more incidents haven’t happened. Not necessarily terrorist attacks, but just anything.

I could understand a permanent strong high fence being put in place, but pissy little join up fences that wouldn’t stop an ant, what’s the point ?

The 'illusion' of safety is often confused with actual safety.

yep and like i said just then, if people going to major events like this realised how not safe it was (bad english I know) alot of people probably wouldn’t actually go.

this pissy fence won’t stop anyone causing havoc if they truely want to. I don’t think it’d give anyone wishing to do so more than 1 minutes extra thoughts on the process.

Unsafe?
How many people have ever been killed by a terrorist attack, at a major event, in Australia? Can’t recall any, ever??

On statistics thus far, you’re at more risk driving your car, eating carrots, or putting on your shoes.
