Tonight the Front Bar got me thinking…
Why is our mascot a Mosquito? I’ve never actually had the thought to myself but after tonight I really can’t work out why!
It’s not a bomber plane clearly. Has no relation to a bomber apart from the fact they can both fly.
Can someone please enlighten me???
Found this on the net:
Essendon captured the 1923 and 1924 VFL Premierships partly due to a group of players nicknamed the ‘Mosquito Fleet’, all between 160 to 167 cm tall.
The players are:
Charlie Hardy
George Shorten
Jack Garden
Jimmy Sullivan
Vince Irwin
Frank Maher
The modern Essendon team mascot is called ‘Skeeta’ and is named after the fleet.

I think Essendon won a few flags in the 1920’s with a group of rovers called the mosquito fleet
We were playing the long game.

It’s approaching the 100 year anniversary of the original Mosquito Fleet, hopefully history repeats with our current group.

Also we should be glad they weren’t nicknamed the Midget Brigade given what time frame they played in.
Not just from the posts in this thread, but I am saddened by how little EFC history EFC fans know without recourse to the “net”.
