The new Essendon Coach [spec] (Part 2)

According to Cal, Hinkley was a big reason for Lappin coming to Tassie. Tassie had approached him before signing Hinkley, and he said no.

Given our big need for development and better player connection, a Hinkley/Lappin combo would have been pretty good.

Former West coast star Mitch Brown I’m keen to hear from too.

Did McVeigh run over your cat or something?

Finals football has been about contested ball and pressure for a reasonably long period of time now.

I would have thought the ā€˜modern game’ is trending more towards transition running and precise ball use - at least over the last couple of years.

Somewhat ironically, weren’t we trying to almost exclusively launch our attacks from half back around the Hird era, which was regarded as futile at the time?

Maybe he was way ahead of the curve…

I can only imagine what it would have cost the AFL to get Lappin to finally move from Geelong after countless offers over the last 17 years.

I doubt the cats are happy about it either - which makes it even better.

Unfortunately they don’t have score source data from that time period.

With contested possession where just above afl average so around 8th and clearance we were average one year and way below the other

Whoever ends up coach it will be fascinating to see what they see as our point of difference.

It will be for sure overall I’ll be happy if who ever comes in can improve our defensive running numbers and increase our pressure rating consistently across four quarters that would be a good year one metric and get games into as many young players who buy into that.

If the coach comes in and tries to establish an attacking game plan straight off the bat I think they will fail.

Tom Morris is generally spot on. Worried about this McVeigh thing. After all this process, if it is McVeigh, it will be underwhelming.

if it helps, every time he talks about it into a microphone, he says ā€œi don’t know, it’s just a gut feelingā€

I’d be happy if the new coach can just teach them to kick and handpass a football

Hope our man HIRD blew them all away with his final presentation today (or tomorrow)

Oh man, I’d forgotten about that. Meninga’s 28 second poitical career is just about the most awkward thing you can watch.

If it was tomorrow he’d have the job! Apparently

I don’t think it’s underwhelming. I’m getting annoyed at this weird narrative that it’s some sort of appeasement pick. McVeigh has earnt his shot at a senior job. We would be lucky if it’s at our club

He hasn’t been in a premiership winning environment as a player or as an assistant coach. His interim coaching experience was also bad like Solly.

Everything shows that he is not quite the best candidate we have interviewed.
