I don’t agree with extending bench to 5 that some suggesting
Entire point of sub it seems is to allow a team who loses a player to still have a level playing field against the opposition numbers wise.
I hope the sub bib has had a refresh
Why does everything have to be level in every game?
There’s good luck and bad luck that occurs within games and in seasons. Swings and roundabouts. Some of the best and most memorable wins are when a side were battered but rallied to win despite only having a player or two left on the pine.

Given we have many times lost a player in the 1st qtr and been at a serious disadvantage i think it is a good move. I am very surprised that it is only in for AFL seniors though. Other leagues do get concussed players

Forgive my density, but how does it help player safety?
Is it just that in the event of a player being concussed, it means there are still 22 players available for rotations, and in the event of a another injury, where normally the clubs would choose to give the injured player a jab and send him back onto the field instead of benching benching and only playing with 21, the clubs are now more likely to be conservative and bench the injured player, knowing that they’ll still have 22 available?
Also, the concussion = automatic 12 day break isn’t necessarily written in stone. The AFL’s press release mentions that “where a player is withheld from a game with a presumptive diagnosis of concussion but on subsequent assessment the club doctor and/or specialist supports a change in that diagnosis, the subsequent assessment must be discussed with and can only be approved by the AFL Chief Medical Officer.”
